Alchohol During A D&D Game?

I've had a few drinks during a game, other players I know sometimes bring rum or vodka to the game and a few drinks.

One player bought a whole casr of beer to a game. Its still sitting at the house we used to play at unopened. Its been there for like 6 months. Nothing like warm aged beer :)

"I use the Dark Side..." :p

Beer (and mead) is almost always consumed at my games. When I DM, I might have a couple but usually no more than that. It just seems appropriate to have a few beers while gaming - kind of like peanut butter and jelly. They just go together.

Our group has no drinkers, and we generally don't prefer people drinking during a game, but as long as it was nothing harder than one or two beers or wine coolers, I wouldn't see a problem. The only thing I don't like is the smell of alcoholic beverages -- it's a bit rancid to me.

In younger days I used to play in games where people were heavily drunk, and I'll never do it again, because the drunk players can't take a word you say seriously.

A couple of beers never harmed anything. More than that can be a problem. As a DM I noticed that 2 beers even enhance the atmosphere, but beyond that DMing can suffer. It's impossible for me after about a sixpack, because I lose interest. Nowadays I usually skip the beers though, and only drink Pepsi Max.

But we never drink to the point of intoxication. We save that for the New Year's Eve party.

Well, we save that for saturdays ;)

Yes, and No.

It depends where we are. If we are playing at my house, it's generally acceptable and I don't mind a beer or five. Improves the DMing, lets people get into character without being embarrassed. As we are all friends, and all experienced and mature in such matters it's not a drama. No-one drinks to get drunk for instance.

If I'm DMing at someone elses house, then it's up to them. Even when they say "That's fine" it's still a non-event unless they crack the first stubby.

To be honest, best game I've ever had involved a friends empty, old-school house (Got that darkwood panelling, you know), several bottles of alcohol, good friends and the Wheel of Time book.

Alcohol even makes Wheel of Time good. Amazing.

I have found that anything more than a single beer makes it a little more difficult to keep track of the multitude of details as a DM. But I have a very low tolerance for alcohol. As a player it doesnt seem as important and one or two wouldn't hurt.

My group includes 3 people that dont drink at all for religious/family history problems, including the hosts. So the rest of the group normally avoids drinking around them, unless someone else in the group is actually having a party at their house, and the teetolars have the option of not coming.

Last time we played shadowrun we brought a couple six packs and all sat down to play and didn't have a problem we limited everyone to 1 beer/hour of play. And everyone was fine (we played 4 hours and ended up only drinking 2 each). So this is probably going to become a more regular thing now for our group. As long as someone else shells out the money next time for some beer.

Drinking at a game session has never been an issue for us. Generally we don''t imbibe, but now and again, we'll tip back a few brown pops. No harm, no foul.

Gaming and drinking goes together like fishing and drinking!!!

Seriously though, drinking at the gaming table is no big deal. Just make sure that everyone is safe to drive home afterwards. (Not that any of my players, or me for that matter, have ever gotten drunk while gaming.)
