Alchohol During A D&D Game?

The limit in my game is on "disruption," not on substance. Most of the players have shown they can't play effectively while stoned (including me), but can play effectively while rolling (including me). Most of the players get sleepy when they drink without physical activity (including me), which negatively affects the game, but the Irish guy gets cheerfully drunk every time he plays, with no ill effect on the game.

So in my game, if you can imbibe it and not screw up the game, feel free. If not, don't.

I've had a few beer drinkers in my games. It's never been an issue. I know some folks drink beer like others drink soda. I always tell them I don't care what they drink so long as they are of age and do so in moderation so as to keep a clear head for the game.

I even have a couple of players who have a cocktail or two (i.e. whiskey or rum and coke). They get told the same thing. Don't let the alcahol become an issue in the game. They haven't. If they did, they would be asked to not drink at games any more.

I am very, very much anti-drug/alcohol so of course that means no drinks for me. Generally nobody else in my regular group worries about it either.

Not only beer, but homebrewed beer! Out of four people in my group, two are homebrewers. My game table is right next to the area where I store my brewing equipment and conditioning beers.

There's nothing like drinking a homebrew while playing your homebrew!

Any (legal) thing in moderation is fine, as long as it doesn't annoy or disturb the other players. If someone is markedly uncomfortable with all alcohol use, for instance, I'd probably stick to the request to avoid consumption at the game table. For similar reasons, most of us (I'd wager) don't allow smoking at the table - it's perfectly legal, but it's also something that bothers a large number of people.

Anyway, I'm not averse to some mild consumption of alcohol, but I wouldn't anyone getting drunk during the game. As I said above, moderation is key. As long as everyone is acting reasonably, there shouldn't be much problem.

I don't mind a beer or two during a game, but I tend to not have much fun at games if there's serious drinking going on. The quality of play deteriorates pretty quickly. Even if some folks are having a beer or two, I don't drink if I'm DM'ing (except maybe one at the very tail end of a session) because I can feel my thought process getting cloudy. Not to mention the fact that one of my groups (the one where the occasional drink is drunk) is an hour drive for me.

Some of the best games I ever played have had alchohol consumption... and some of the best I've played have had rules against it. Well, not 'rules' per se, but where clearly it would have been frowned on if someone had brought a beer.

More of the first than the second, I'll admit. In general getting lightly tipsy lowers inhibitions and promotes socialization. In general (and in moderation).

There's a significant difference between these two activities. My drinking doesn't clog up your lungs, stink up your clothes, or irritate your mucous membranes. If someone told me they're markedly uncomfortable with all alcohol use, I'd politely (probably) observe that it's lucky they don't use alcohol, then.
