Alchohol During A D&D Game?

A beer or two might be ok, if they actually stop at 1 or 2. I've known some people who get real stupid after only a couple, so it will also depend on whether or not they are lightweights. I've had to reinstate a ban on alcohol because they couldn't stop at 1 or 2, one player liked whiskey, and just a couple of shots made him a real pain in the butt. One of my players used to get so drunk that he blacked out, that's what originally prompted my ban on the booze.

So you might give it a shot for a session or two and see how it works out. Tell them that you're trying it, but you reserve the right to re-ban the alcohol.

I think you have to look at the players. We are a late thirty-something group of long time friends who only get to play infrequently, so it is always a social occation. We usually have beer at the sessions and no one over indulges. However, I have certainly been involved in games in my younger years with drugs and alcohol pretty much ruined the game. As our kids have gotton older some parents frown on drinking in front of them, which is a legitimate reason to ask that guests not drink and I would certainly honor it. I would question any who would insist on drinking or refuse to play because they were asked not to drink while the kids were there. As I get older and busyer, I often find that I am gaming when tired. I do everything when I'm tired--have enough kids and you will too. I think it is time to trade the beer for Red Bull.

I guess it depends on the players. In my group, it's a non-issue. All of my players, including me and excluding one who doesn't drink, are simply unable to get drunk enough to affect the game, unless the whole thing was planned well in advance. Simply put, there isn't enough alcohol in the house at any given moment. For example, last session we emptied a bottle of jack daniels, but the only relevant disturbance was still the guy playing on the Playstation nearby.

I'm noticing a pattern to responses to this kind of thread.

Generic Response to "Is <Blank> Okay?"

[Insert : Observation that reasonable behavior with regards to <Blank> doesn't cause problems]
[Insert : Statement that excess <Blank> can cause problems]
[Insert : Optional amusing personal story]
[Insert : Conclusion that if people behave like adults things will be fine]
lol!

In future, when you next see a thread like this, could you just post those 4 responses in order so that a moderator can happily close it, knowing that all angles have been covered? :D

Cheers,

As I have pointed out a few times in....

If you drink and game (to intoxication), your character will recieve a body cavity search by Frost Giants.

So you can take that as a reason not to drink. or TO drink I guess.

Rel: Taking me as a sig is fine. I love to read my own words/listen to myself speak. Thats why I'm DM :D.

I have never had a problem with drinking in games, simply because of the fact we are all fairly experienced drinkers.

(And Aussies get a + 2 on their fortitude saves verse beer. You yanks can't handle it?)

People smoking I don't mind as long as they do it out of my face/the house. People smoking pot on the other hand tends to have a game that starts with them laughing, and ending with them all depressed unless they take more (And get all giggly again). Pot smokers annoy the hell out of me in games, seeming to be unable to ever match the right mood.

I've never played a game in which pot made the game better. Alcohol, the more dangerous drug, seems better suited.

2, any more wrecks it for the group, and more wrecks it for you the drinker. 2 Standard Drinks in 1 session with food

dont mix dwarves with drunks! you get vomit on the mapgrid.

Any (legal) thing in moderation is fine, as long as it doesn't annoy or disturb the other players.
Here that means I can ask the other people at the table if they mind me bringing a "lady of the night" along to lick my ears while I play to bring me good luck... or i could go the usual route and buy more dice till I find some lucky ones

Our group has no drinkers, and we generally don't prefer people drinking during a game, but as long as it was nothing harder than one or two beers or wine coolers, I wouldn't see a problem. The only thing I don't like is the smell of alcoholic beverages -- it's a bit rancid to me.
Of course it's rancid--that's what makes it alcoholic! :D

I don't drink. When we play at my house, I don't have anything to drink (alcoholic, naturally) so we OD on Mountain Dew instead.

When we play at other places (we tend to rotate venues so everyone gets a chance to not drive) most of the other guys will down a beer; maybe two. I've never noticed that it impacted our play in the slightest, so I don't have any quibble with it.

Wow! Sounds like not only are the laws different where you are but moderation has also been re-defined.

Pot and nitrous oxide, as drugs go, are more suited to games like Paranoia and Toon, if you have a drug of choice to modify your gaming experience.

Not that I'm advocating either in general. That would be taking a political stand on an apolitical board.
