I've owned the original work print for Alien 3 for a few years now, and I must say its awesome. Its about 20-30 minutes longer, includes an extra action sequence, does NOT have the stupid "magic egg" on the Sulaco, no cheesy chestburster coming out as Ripley dies, and a less dumbed down ending, to name just a few of the differences.

Interesting. Of course, that just raises more questions for me. You really must be more generous with your spoilers. :D

On the other hand Alien 3 is one of the more interesting failed movies I've ever seen. I watch it over and over, somehow fascinated by project that starts off so well and then descends into... utter crapola. Lot to learn, there...

Sounds alot like Event Horizon. Such promise at the beginning and, well, that was that.
