Alien Vs. Predator - still surprisingly cool

You know, we watched it just last night and it was nowhere near as bad as I'd been led to believe. Head and shoulders above such tripe as The Chronicles of Riddick. Good, straightforward stupid monster movie fare.

I wouldn't buy it, and I still think PSWAnderson is a hack, but there's nothing wrong with a little hackery now and then. It was better than Resident Evil, even if the female lead wasn't as good as Milla.

Lots of good tense moments, lots of juicy Alien Versus Predator action (which I felt was kind of the point of the whole thing), lots of death, and a good little ending "twist" that you could see coming from halfway through the film, but that's part of the fun. We watched the "extended version" which didn't feel flabby or over-long AT ALL. Nice, tight little film.

The sort of film my wife and I would be happy making.

I could have wished for an R-Rated film, I could have wished for better writing and direction in the early part of the film (you didn't get the sense of character that a movie like Aliens gives you, and I know, that's comparing it against one of the true classics, but isn't that what classics are for?), and I definitely thought the slow-motion facehuggers were more "giggly" than "squirmy", but otherwise: good stupid fun.

A solid 6 or even a 7 out of 10.

Although I hate 'me too' posts this was nearly 100% my reaction to AvP. A friend of mine, to this day, refuses to watch or even talk about it (something about a tagline from the film bugging him). Too bad really. He misses a lot of good movies that way though (won;t watch Spiderman 2 because of the actor playing Doc Ock).

You want to make monster movies with my wife? Hey!

People who don't love Alfred Molina confuse me.

I believe there was a Batman vs. Predator graphic novel. That's actually a halfway decent concept, I believe. Although I don't honestly believe anyone could pull that off as a movie without it suxx0ring major ass.
I have that one. Others I've seen in the stores but didn't buy were Tarzan vs. Predator at the Earth's Core and Superman vs. Aliens..... Dark Horse put out a bunch of Aliens and Predator comics.. including a sequel to Aliens that (IMO) were waaay better than Alien 3...

Same here. He's great.

KenM; yeah, that's the rumor I heard as well. I'm a little disappointed that this isn't that Director's Cut. I wonder if that's still just a rumor, or if there's a plan out there for it.

I hate Alien: Resurrection. and I mean hate, hate, hate that movie with a flaming passion. What they did in that movie with the hybrid was the worst in storytelling, I just want to go to the director and... (well, I can't say that on here without getting in trouble). This movie had so much potential, it was doing really well, and then the damn hybrid. What in the world's hell were they thinking?

I liked the first Alien movies.

I liked both Predator movies, loved the cool gadgets introduced in Predator 2.

AvP was awesome I think. Sure, the acting was a bit bad, but I went for the action. I liked the action, they did a good job with both alien races, and how he told the story was pretty damn cool. It was different, and it was fun.

I want the Directors Cut to come out soon...I want the extra 20 or so minutes of violence, and rated R. It must be rated R. The other six in the franchies were rated R, why not this one?

Better than Alien3? Better than the SECOND HALF of Alien3, I'd say. Alien3 starts out really, really well, I think;

I disagree, 3 was when the franchise was ruined. Not only was it when the studio unnecessarily tied Weaver to the franchise, it also cheese killed 2 very good characters and infected another in a manner that even the most heavy handed DM would feel was grossly unfair.

4 was a pretentious French film with Lexx level camp. Perfect for putting a tombstone on a declining franchise that could have been saved with a decent film.

Because the franchise has been whored out by Hollywood. It was taken down to the street corner and turned out. They curb-stomped out the series's teeth so it can service families looking for babysitters.

I would not be surprised if those involved with the film activly lied about the existance an 'R' rated version to save face and to avoid getting torn apart by the thirsty gorehounds.

Uh... you do realize that it's a movie, not a session of D&D...

Yeah, there was a lot of bad PR before the movie came out around the rating. I'm not really that cynical, but I could actually buy this one.

Hee. Don't even get me started on the stupid finale to Thelma And Louise. Those cops were at least an EL 12, for a couple of third-level waitresses? What were they supposed to do?

That DM gets fired.

From Imdb.com:
Around the time of the film's release, it was reported that at a special industry screening director Paul W.S. Anderson said that the film was always planned as an R-rated movie and shot that way, but only three weeks prior to release the studio changed that by severely cutting the film for a lower PG-13 rating. This account has been heavily disputed by original "AVP" writer Peter Briggs. It was later revealed that this "press-screening" never took place, and was only an internet rumor started by fans. Anderson has claimed in interviews that the film seen in theaters is the version he intended audiences to see.
