Alignment Question on a tricky char : ( Marv from Sincity)

Well, in that case see it once for Bruce and the artistic merit. Just go into it knowing that there'll be a number of Payback moments throughout the film. If it's any consolation, Mr Willis' character is the closest thing to an honest to god hero the film has.

actually the film is really nice... i didnt like payback with mel anyways...

Back to the point though...

Another example of necesarry evil: A paladin commander of large army in a large battle against a huge horde of orcs.
I order to win he must sacrifice the first ranks of his infantry to make a cavalry flank attack to destroy the orcs... Doing this small evil ( in his knowledge ) makes him lose his class?

I do agree that the dnd alignments are extremely strick but i think that the char marv is probably Neutral Good .

This because he had methods in the tactics and would follow them to the book..
( so u can count Chaotic out )
Also all the evil he kills or face ( many comment on him : lets get rid of the do gooder )
too many self-less acts to repay a favor ( even if he uses brutal methods cant define him as neutral or evil)

Ofc all this is IMO

Nope. Unless by "sacrifice" you mean that he's going down to the front ranks and ritually sacrificing each infantryman to Gruumsh. The paladin has no way of knowing the infantrymen will all die. They are professional soldiers who all know the risks.

I'm going to go ahead and throw my voice in for Chaotic Neutral/Evil. Being chaotic doesn't mean you act randomly. You could be the leader of a large military force and be chaotic. Killing evil doesn't make you good. Otherwise those evil villains who kill their evil minions would be shining bastions of goodness. The fact that Marv enjoys torturing and slaughtering the guys he kills points to his being neutral at best, but most likely evil.

A chaotic person will potentailly form close, loyal bonds with a small group of people, as Marv has done. My opinion is that Marv is Chaotic Neutral on his medication, and Chaotic Evil when he isn't taking it.

Paladins arn't the best choice of yardstick for good, as far as alignment is concerned. They have all manner of additional restrictions on their actions from their class that isn't itself part and parcel with simply being Lawful Good.

Bring paladins into the debate and people go crazy. Best to leave them out of this, lest the thread spiral off on its own.

The only main character I would tag as approaching NG in that film would be Hardigan.

You must've seen a different movie than I did, then. I saw absolutly no evidence of this sort of activity at any point whatsoever. The only thing I recall seeing him do more than once was his jacket line and that isn't exactly method or tactic; it's just another Ezekiel 25:17.

He's NE
He's evil 1. he tortures people
2. gives 'em false hope then kills em
3. 'I dont know about you but im havin a ball'

and he's Neutral coz he has a code of honour but no respect for the 'law'

Marv's alignment would depend on if he had taken his medicine lately. :)

Chaotic Neutral if he had.
Chaotic Evil if he had not.

Yeah, but it's not his fault, though. He just gets confused sometimes. ;)
