all about rangers

You should carefully read the description of the Ride skill, and the Mounted Combat section of the SRD. Basically if you're riding your companion, it goes like this: ...
Except you can skip the Ride checks because you have enough skill ranks that you can't fail.

If you aren't riding your companion, then you need to use the Handle Animal rules to determine whether it can attack or not.
Note that with an animal companion, it's a free action to command it instead of a move action. Also, you get a +4 bonus when handling your companion, so this check will always succeed too. :)

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I think you've helped me finally decide on what I want my char to do. Hopefully I can talk to my DM tonight and finally get word if we can use things other than core for feats and whatnot. After I talk to him I'll post another copy of my char as for what I plan on doing with him by lvl 10 and again at lvl 20 and you can proceed to slaughter it as fit :)

For non-fighters you get so few feats over a 20 level career that does not make a lot of sense - 7 feats for non humans and 8 for humans.

Well, I just see it different, but it's also a matter of style. :)

Arrow Mind (from CAdv) lets you use your bow in melee (it threatens an area and doesn't provoke an AoO when you shoot).

Question: wasn't there a PrC called Silver Archer or something that ultimately let you threaten an area with your ranged attack? If I'm not just dreaming this, then that would be something nice to aim for. Note that that PrC didn't let you threaten the area immediately next to you.

Close... it was the Peerless Archer from the Silver Marches sourcebook. :)

They get a threatened area (including reach) and ranged Power Attack. Pretty ridiculous stuff.

I knew there was a "Silver" in the name somewhere! :p Thanks.

For those two tasks, this is true.

Interesting. I hadn't realized the DC for this was so low, but indeed it's only a DC10. The (slight) challenge lies in teaching the animal two tricks to attack all creatures, which isn't much of anything if you choose those as bonus tricks. :)

Also, you'll want to eventually look into a mithral chain shirt, since it will let you apply more of your Dex to AC than the breastplate you're currently wearing.

In fact, you probably shouldn't be wearing a breastplate, unless it's mithral, after first level, since you lose the benefits of combat style in medium armor.

Pickaxe and Patryn both look at my char stats again please...

I "have" a breastplate because we found it in loot (hense its in possessions). My gear, read "things I'm wearing", is a piece of studded leather. Which I probably will continue to use until I can afford a mithril chain shirt, and maybe cele armor later.

Now that thats taken care of...

I talked to my DM yesterday and he said "I would really like to stay just core for now. Maybe later on we can use more, but for now just the core books."

This struck me bad for 3 reasons. 1. Some of my char ideas were shot so I need to do some replanning, 2. Why do we have all these books and access to them if we can't use them (HE is the one that owns 90% of them, not us :p), and 3. What exactly does "maybe later" mean? Is that next level (2) so I don't need to worry about my idea being messed up, or 10 where after I've already scratched my char idea I can "do it" now that it's too late?

*grumbles*
