geez, That link reminds me of the time I was at my Grandfathers place in the country. It was a bad winter and my grandfather started putting out feed for the deer. At one point there were 10 deer in the back yard no more than 10 meters away from me. I wish I had a picture of that.

Most likely it was HBC (Hit By Car) and got disoriented for a while. Thats a pretty common reason for finding raptors and owls on/near a road, dazed and confused but relatively unhurt.

It's too early even this far south (I live on the east side of his state) for a fledgling owl - besides the picture shows full flight feathers on the right wing - that makes it too old for a hopper (a nickname for fledgling birds who can't fly much but hop a lot). IIRC they should be nesting soon if not already, but not have young'uns fledging yet.

Yup. If it flew far enough that they couldn't chase it, then it's not that young.
