Alternate Caster Level System based on BAB

Is there a decent way of creating a caster level system that is modular much like BAB.

As it is you Base attack stacks independent of which class you get the extra level from.

Do you think it would be plausible to stack caster levels?

IMDHO I think Divine the number of spells per day, and Arcane another pool.

The main point is each time you get a level you get x points to each of your magic pools. Much like BAB these stack, so a Paladins Divine levels would add to a Cleric. Now a Paladin isn't a great spellcaster and at 20th is about the equivalent of a 8th level cleric in number of spells per day. So a Paladin would have add say 1 Divine level per 3 levels of Paladin. A multi-classed 9th Paladin/11th Cleric would a Divine Level Pool of 14, so would cast spells in the same quantity of a 14th level Cleric.

The other way would be to give each level of Cleric 3 divine points, Paladin 1... then crossreference to another table to see the number of spells per day. This has overhead to it, but you could figure out the cost of powers per day into the system (Druid wildshape costing x points) and possibly using feats to add points back into the system (Feat Divine 1, adds 1 point to the effective caster level).

Basically do you think there is a more modular way the caster levels can be achieved that is inline with the IMDHO very good improvement that BAB is above THAC0... considering that they way current numbers of spells per day is as dated as THAC0 too.

I'm looking at it one step beyond, not just caster level for power, but the total number of spells per day as well.

So rather then say a 10th sorc/ 10th wizard having about 10 1st level spells and no high level ones, the caster would have about 5 of every level from 1st to 9th.

A bit like BAB which goes 5, then 6/1. You would have a single rating and that translates to the total number of spells. Could have two different progression rates based on arcane or divine pools or the arcane level ups would just give more.

Say a 20th wizard had a spell rating of '60'.

That translates to say 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6

While a 20th level cleric had a spell rating of '45'
That translates to say 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4

And a 2oth level Bard would have a spell rating of '30'
That translate to say 3 3 3 3 3 3

It probably would do better if all the steps (of spell progression where possible) and where rating points could be swapped from daily spell use to more permanent spell-like abilities or semi permenant effects too. Use the same table for all spell casters... things like wild shape for instance would diminsh the maximum number of spells per day... or you could easily have a variant druid that is makes more heavy use of spells by sacrficing some of the druid powers.
