Alternate CR/EL Rules? Reference?

I've been examining the alternate CR rules in a pdf I found online with the title heading "Immortals Handbook", IIRC. It looks really good, but I've heard some people mention that there is an updated version that has been tweaked to fix some problems. Does anyone know where this can be found? Or what the proper title is?

Also, the version I'm using seems broken re: outsiders and dragons. The xp is ridiculous as the CR, in a couple instances, skyrocketed from CR 7 to CR 17 - which was way out of proportion to the actual encounter difficulty...

Hey Mighty Ogrork :)

That sounds like you're talking about Upper_Krust's system. He's got some stuff over here. Mind you, he's got newer versions of it, since there were things wrong with that version too. I believe he's at version 6 now.. Which will be put into his Immortal's Handbook (when it finally gets released, which depends on him getting some free time to spend on finishing the thing up, or so I've heard :D).
There's this topic for discussion about the handbook. Please try not to hound him too much, he's feeling guilty about the delay as it is ;)

Hi Ogrork the Mighty! :)

The documents in question are from the appendices of the Immortals Handbook.

I have released version 4 on these boards and I have distributed version 5 to a few people to gauge feedback.

The latest version (5.1) appeared in the book Grim Tales (by Bad Axe Games).

I'll also have what is effectively version 6 (more like 5.2) in the Immortals Handbook.

Be sure to read the rules for Challenge Ratings AND Encounter Levels and I am sure that will clear up any problems you have.

The Challenge Ratings (equal to Effective Character Level) are indeed higher usually 150% for most monsters except for Dragons which are about 200% compared to the official rules.

However the Encounter Level rules sort all this out.

If you have any questions I am sure I (or others) would be only too happy to help.

Anyway, I appreciate the kind words.

Oh, and thanks for helping out Kavon mate. ;)

The lesser dragons do indeed come out a bit overrated, even with the silver rule, but you can fix that by playing dragons as the book suggests and never putting them underground where they can't fly. (They're smart enough that they shouldn't try that anyway.)

For dragons, metagame. That's the best suggestion I can make.

Also, another huge problem in the versions online are in giving XP. Check out my alternative formula here:

http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86471

That formula MIGHT appear as official in the finished product of the Immortal's Handbook, or at least I hope. There's still some discussion, but I've pretty much answered every issue with the formula, and it works pretty much perfectly. Use the CRs from UK's system, but use that formula for determining XP if you want accuracy. (If you don't, you'll notice Level 9 characters gaining more for any specific encounter than Level 8 characters do, which is obviously a mistake as XP awards are designed to go down as you advance, not up.)

Just a note, you'll have to go down to my posts to find the formula. I kinda sorta hijacked the thread because it was discussing what I was working on at the time. :D

Speaking of which, UK, get in touch. We'll discuss the formula further now with the most recent discussion. ;)
