Alternate Rules for Hit Points and Lingering Damage

I have toyed with the idea of doing a wounds system where 25% of all HP lost become wounds or wound points. PCs could only regain HP up to their max HP minus their wounds, but they could remove the wounds by spending hit dice after a long rest. I haven't had the chance to playtest it at all, so I'm not sure if it would actually contribute anything to in-game decision making.

Thanks to everyone who responded! I am going to use the Injuries Tables in the DMG, also like the use of exhaustion.

I really like Shiroiken's idea of rolling full HD after a long rest, instead of just healing to full hit points. That might be what I'm looking for...
