Alternatives to Amazon.com?

I may be shot for suggesting it, but I've had VERY good luck and good prices with walmart.com lately. I've ordered several WotC books, Spycraft 2.0, and recently two James Patterson novels from them, with no damage, and timely service.

Personally, I've never had any problems with Amazon. It looks like it's simply an isolated incident since you've got the release date wrong for the movie.
Me neither; I love Amazon.

Although, I have heard from many people that their pre-orders delivery kinda sucks.

I've also noticed that for indie releases of all types (music, gamebooks, etc.), they often don't get it listed until quite a while after it's already released.

I have known this for a while, which is why I never preorder through Amazon.

the funniest thing is to track the items.. item shipped from nashville, tn... gets to atlanta in 2 hrs.. gets to my house 4 days later...

And you're blaming this on Amazon and not the shipping company because.................

because i specifically tell amazon not to use UPS. and to only deliver by the US Postal Service.

and they never listen.

Barnes and Nobles never makes that mistake.

Amazon

Buy

Books A Million (ever better if you have the 10% discount card)

Barns & Nobels (ditto on the card)

Half-Books

Powells

Overstock

Couple of other .com's out there I'm sure I'm missing.

It's funny though. One book, the Calvin & Hobbes collection, was cheaper at Buy.com than Amazon, but they couldn't get it in stock. Went to Books A Million and got it for cheaper (I have the card) and no shipping & handling, which even amazon.com wasn't going to do because of the weight of the set. Good deal all around.

It's all been said.. They've nailed just about anyplace to go...

All I would add is ... DON'T BUY from BUY.COM!!!

Okay they have good prices. I've had good luck with them before.... BUT...

They have many products listed that they don't actually have. They say they ship the product - they even give you a shipping number and they take the money from your account. What does not happen is that they actually ship the product.

1st sign of trouble - Product hung in the (In Transit) on Shipping Tracking for two weeks.

2nd sign of trouble - BUY.COM - does not have a phone number. After research on the web I found one... but it's to a call center in India. All they can do is redirect you to the website to fill out a blackhole help message (which I never got a response from) - You can't just cancel an order that's been listed as shipped. You have to follow a process which takes months and all through the same blackhole webpage form. Which no one responds to. Ever.

3rd & final sign of trouble - I contacted the shipping agency directly to check on my order. Talked to a lovely woman who let slip that
A. The tracking number I was given was an intent to ship number - a number companies give shipping agencies to give them a head's up about incoming shipments = not the actual shipping number. They had never received the product.

B. She further said that they seem to get an awful lot of those from BUY.COM these days.

C. What really bothered her was that they didn't have a way to contact the company. THE SHIPPING AGENCY can not speak directly to the company they ship products for. What the heck is that????

So if you get your product from BUY - congratulations. I called my credit card company and gave them the lowdown. They checked into it and gave me a full refund based on my information, the shippers information and the spike of complaints against the company in the last three years.

Oh and a year and a half later, my order is still on line and listed as IN TRANSIT. Gosh I hope it gets here soon!

I've placed 10 orders with Buy.com in the last 2 years and never had a problem with them. As I said about Amazon to the OP, this seems like an isolated incident. Why bash the company and warn people NEVER BUY FROM THIS COMPANY EVAR!11!!1!! when you've had one bad experience?
