Alternatives to heavy armor for clerics?

For instance, if Life clerics had the ability to cast cure wounds with a 30-foot range, would that be too much?
I would say it is too much. Improving the thing you are best at is a lot more valuable than taking away something you don’t care about. The nature cleric ideas might be ok. Like others, I haven’t seen or thought much about nature clerics.

Well what would you suggest they wear for protection? Heavy pelts? Layers of fat? Paperclips weaved into a shirt? Coke bottle caps? Living turtles holding hands? Braided chest hair? Tuning forks constantly oscillating at the frequency of annoyance? A tuba? Scratch that! A tuba is pretty solid and covers most vital areas except your dignity.

What about spare the dying as a bonus cantrip, useable at 30 feet?

dwarf stat bonuses are matches better suited for classes that already have medium armor comes to mind

And the thing is, dwarves make great fighters even though their weapon and armour proficiency bonuses are redundant. Having a proficiency that you will never use does not mean you deserve to get some other ability instead.

As Tony Vargas has already pointed out, scale mail + 14 Dex is just as good as chain mail + 14 Str. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other as far as I'm concerned.
You totally missed the funny parts!! And then turned it into a serious reply!? Look at the laugh clicks, man!

I wouldn’t do it, for the same reason. OTOH, simply giving it as a bonus cantrip seems OK. And you could separately consider making StD 30 ft for everyone.
