Am I the only one who feels Eberron's setting to be limiting?

I'm still referring to the original group of PC's. The latest group has not suffered a similar fate. Actually they just got a BIG payoff from a lengthy mission into Xen'Drik and it is fascinating listening to them bandy about ideas of how to spend their loot in Stormreach. They are incredibly "risk averse" and a couple of them are considering spending almost the entirety of their loot on Animated +1 Shields and scrambling for every other possible way to boost their (already quite high) AC's.

I must scare them.

I think almost all of those can be found in Eberron (not sure about the talking apes, though).
Talking Apes are easy. Open up Stormwrack and look up the stats on Hadozee. Considering all the water around, they'd fit in well.

Not quite "dark fantasy" however, check out page 7 of the ECS under "The Tone of Eberron."

The features that most set Eberron apart are its tone and attitude. The setting combines traditional midieval fantasy with pulp action and dark adventure.

On page 8 under "Ten Things You Need to Know" #2:

The campaign combines traditional midieval D&D fantasy with swashbuckling action and dark adventure.

So, its in there. You could also check advertising, and it would probably use much the same termonology, though that can be an excercise for another day. Suffice to say its in there.

I see what you're getting at, but a better analogy might be the Hindenberg. You know explosive gas makes for a nice airship, but every now and then things can go horribly wrong! Certainly wizards who use magic on an every day basis also know things can go horribly wrong. It only took one catastrophic accident to end the dirigible era forever...
