Ammunition Woes

I'd suggest that you not lose more than one "box" of ammo per encounter. That way you last a minimum of 3 encounters.

I also think you should consider how long you want archers able to go for when considering such rules.

In my games i make players count ammo. I think it helps the realism with the game, and like was said, even Legolas is short of arrows sometimes. It is cool when they are short of ammo and start thinking about if they must shot or not. And its fair, if you make the dagger thrower get 10 daggers, you must make the arrows ends too.

Any people with proficience in bow and crossbow can make 1d6 extra arrows in a day of adventure most of the time.
 

In 4e it specifies that any thrown magic weapon returns to its owner after each throw. Its not a special property you have to buy, its just something that happens when a weapon is magic.

Following what is in (my opinion) the basic intent of this rule it seems to me that it could easily be also ruled that magical bows come with magical arrows that also return to the user after firing.
