Ampersand: Domains and Divine Power

I would bet Spelljammer instead of my favorite Planescape.

I wouldn't mind a crystalline reboot of Planescape since they keep Sigil and don't put stats on the Lady of Pain.

I'm going to suggest the plane of Dream, it may not tie in to the new setting (whatever it is) but it does tie into Eberron and has alot of untouched potential otherwise.
I vote for Mystara for 2010!

I'm honestly not sure if Sigil and Spelljammer are going to be seperate 4e settings.. aspects of both are currently in the core setting. Manual of the Planes has Spelljammer vehicles, and IIRC one of the Forgotten Realms books talks about the crystal spheres and plogiston... They're really meta-settings (having rules for traveling BETWEEN settings) as opposed to actual settings.

Anyway, ON TOPIC:

I was just thinking the same thing! I know that it will never ever happen ever, but that would be super freaking awesome.

As for domains... is it just me, or is this stuff painfully minor? I would want a cleric of one god to be different from a cleric of another, but this--well. Admittedly, it would be much harder to manage in 4e, considering that 1) mostly everything is rituals now; and 2) the cleric's role is well-defined, such that Lolth's clerics (for instance) should just multiclass into Darlock (the arcane class of your choice for et cetera).

I expected Domains to give an initial multiclass feat that did what the current domains feat do now (modify one at-will) with 3 power feats giving powers unique to each deity. Many if not all FR deities have their own unique spells for instance, and this could let you translate them.

I too was hoping that domains would bring even more diversity to clerics of different gods. I feel that WotC is nibbling at concepts here, but not really going all out to make anything "out of the core". That seems to be an issue with "everything is core". Nothing is unique enough then.

That said, even within everything is core, they could make clerics more different from each other. There is plenty of rich history and rules to steal from from their past.

I was expecting something more along the lines of power-swaps, too. The channel divinity feats are almost assured of being less interesting than the diety CDs, as they are tied to generic concepts instead of the personality or history of a diety. Although it does give characters some more options, for those dieties with a poor CD power, or for those without a diety at all.

Did anyone else notice that domains are open to all divine classes, not just clerics and paladins? This plus each deity has approximately three domains to chose from means you can personalize your divine class quite a bit.
Take the Erathis example, you can decide to have your paladin be more about justice and civilization, so you gain those Power Of... domain feat adjustments to the paladin's Virtuous Strike and Valiant Strike powers as well as the channel divinity powers of Anthem of Civilization and Immediate Justice.
It all boils down to how many feats you want to burn in personalizing.

  • The talk about a plane that is pushing the envelope and could become a key component in nearly any D&D campaign.

The Domains of Dread would fall into this category. Dark Sun would not. PlaneScape would... but think they are already incorporating it into 4e.

But I personally don’t think this is the hint… I think he forgot to put on in. (or he is really evil)

A while back there was a comment that the reason we didn't see the Gladiator-style feats in MP was because they were being developed for another book. I'm guessing that they were designed for DP, since we haven't seen anything about them yet for AP.

I don't think that the domain powers (ie, at-will feats) are overly powerful. I do think that some care will need to be taken with regards to assigning powers to domains, otherwise you're stuck with all the (for example) clerics of a deity using the same power. Sure, they'll have a bunch of options with that power, but it will always be that power. Although with two at-wills, perhaps it won't be too bad.

I'm sure the player of the cleric of Kord in our group is both excited and disappointed.

The divinity feats continue to be a mixed bag. Creation Secret is rediculously awesome.

As for rampant speculation: the planes references suggest Planescape. However, what suggests it more is the comment that it will be useful for most campaigns. Hey, guess what the main headquarters in DMG2 is supposed to be? Sigil. I'd be highly surprised at this point if it were anything other than Planescape.
