Ampersand: Monster Month, now with Themes

*Nods* I am tempted to go all Secret World on them (the ARG that Funcom has been running for it has meant lots of hidden secrets. Like in the coding of websites, etc.).

Those themes are neat though. Hopefully they will be included in the new monster builder when it is released with the Campaign Builder. Nice to be getting new info on that as well.

Yeah, the Demogorgon-based themes are nice. Good advice & structure for using them, and they're not so good that they throw an individual monster's power out of line with their level.

Can't wait to see what other themes are in the MM2!

Themes do look neat; should be useful for DMs still going by the book, who need a nudge to modify monsters. Also good for a grab-bag of adder-on abilities.

However, I dislike at least one notion there. The Death Fury attack power does two things I think are kinda bad. 1) It highly encourages you adding it to a brute. But, brutes have very weak attack bonuses - and it wants you to reduce that by an additional -2? Those attacks are going to whiff. 2) It limits the monster to basic attacks, which is going to make the thing even more boring. Granted, many brutes are just basic attacks (another issue I have), but still. I get the idea they're going for, but it just leads to more, well, boring monsters instead of interesting ones.

Yeah, I would probably refrain from putting that power on anything other than an already mundane brute or soldier.

As for whiffing more often, would two rolls with a -2 give you a better chance to hit a defender's AC than one roll w/o the -2? Brutes usually have to roll above average to hit a defender's AC, so are two attempts better than one attempt with a better chance to hit? My math-fu is weak.

As long as 20 is autohit/crit, it is better unless you needed to specifically roll an 18 or up to hit. if you need to roll a 19 to hit, your chance to hit is the same, but your chance to crit is better, similar situation to if you need a 17 or better.
