How is that desperate for failure? I noticed it white watching the video. Nothing more or less.. I've been critical of the marketing, but I want it to succeed. It seems pretty clear to me both can be true. Just as I criticized the lame 50th anniversary celebration from WotC and want DND to succeed. Looking in the mirror and trying to make things better is how things get better. Ymmv, of course.
It does vary. It definitely seems like “more”.

Why would you not wait to start promoting it when people can start buying it?
Because you've already sold it to 30,000 people. What you want at that point is to have 10,000 DMs raring to run the game rather than 10,000 DMs putting it on the "maybe I'll try it someday" pile along with another fifty other games. There is no other time at which you can build hype or time when it will be new.

And yeah "not a finisher" is much more likely than my theorising.

They might be looking to pushing more in connection with the physical release. Hopefully.

I saw that they had uploaded part 1 of an actual play using the Delian Tomb (the adventure Matt designed in one of his videos as an example of "Look, it doesn't have to be more complex than this!"), both to the MCDM channel and to Matt's own channel. I noticed two things when checking it out:
  • For someone who's in the process of releasing what is likely a career-defining product, Matt seems kind of disinterested during the video, spending a lot of time checking his phone(!). The other players seem much more into it. That might just be fatigue – I gather they've been having a bit of a crunch period getting things ready. I did enjoy his barbs toward James when the 5-person party encounters six goblins, and he says "Is that all you've got?" (it wasn't). I remember Matt seeming much more animated when doing things regarding Flee, Mortals!, but I could be misremembering.
  • On the MCDM channel, the latest video before this one is 7 months old.
Did it never occur to you that what you're reading as disinterest is...him roleplaying Jago?

Playing Jago as a "Yeah, whatever these guys are" type character is a valid choice. It may or may not be the best choice for a video meant to promote the game, but it's a choice.

But poking around with your phone mid-game is generally considered bad form in a private game (unless you have your sheet on D&DB or are checking AON or something like that), and moreso in a game people are supposed to be watching. He does become more animated later, and there's one time where he's clearly using the phone to take a picture and maybe post it somewhere so maybe that's what he was doing at the start as well.

I want the best for this game. On paper, it looks like something that should be up my alley, but I would of course need to play it to see if it works as well as I hope. I don't want MCDM to drop the ball.

This sort of psychologizing players for how they play is exactly the thing that makes people NOT want to stream publically.

Matt is on record on his twitch streams stating that the delian tomb game is some of the best fun he's had in any rpg in all his years. Take that as you will, but I don't think there is any merit in trying to interrogate someone's internal experience of what is and isn't fun.

He's also been on record saying that the reason the original game streams ended were partially because several of the players weren't thrilled about being on camera, and having their actions/playstyles/selves being so heavily discussed/critiqued.

I finally got around to watching part of the actual gameplay stream and I don't see what you guys are on about.

At first I thought maybe he was acting a little strange but at once James called on him he didn't miss a beat. He seemed like he was just getting into it. He was playing a living corpse and acting as such.

I know for lots of us at our home tables being on your phone is a major no-no, but the man is also promoting the game he just spent the last year+ producing. He was probably monitoring the stream, and posting to socials to let people know they were live.

I only watched the first hour so far, so perhaps something something wild happens in the second half but with the way this thread is going I was expecting muuuuuch worse lmao.
