[Amusing] Critical Hit on Yourself...?

Has any one else ever rolled a critical hit on themself? When this happened during my groups first Star Wars one shot last night, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry...

So one of the players fired a missile at an enemy ship. This was his first action of combat. He then proceeded to roll , well, really bad for the rest of combat. The combat went on a fairly long time.

Several times throughout the combat , the missile flew by the target and missed each time. So, finally, the player rolls good and blows up the ship himself with his ships blasters.

Now, because the missile no longer had a target it locked onto him (pure bad luck). He rolled to see if it would hit him. He rolled a critical hit for 106 points of damage (he had 120 HP).

It destroyed his shields and pretty much fried all his systems...

We didn't *want* to laugh...

Anyone else ever have something like this happen in any game?

I use a fumble system and hit nearest possible Hans (one of my players) is yelled out with alarming regularity.

Sorta close, but equal in hilariousness. :D

A player in one of my early 3E campaigns wasn't so good at his checks on creating items, and I was feeling rather RBDM - so I let his item still be created. It was supposed to be a shield that gave some sort of Protection from Missiles effect, I can't really remember.

But I do remember that I made it a Missle Attractor, and no, not one of these "Every missile has a 50% of having the shield-bearer as it's target", but one of the 2E "Every #*&$ missile withing a 500ft. radius will hit this shield" ones.

So, a while later, during a massive ground battle, it was hilarious when all the arrows the opposing army shot turned, en masse, and fell upon the shield. It was a tower shield, and the PC hasily got under it, but-

Have you ever heard rain on a tin roof? :D

Sounds like you all had fun !! The first time I came across "Critical Fumbles" was when I was playing Warhemmer Fantasy Roleplay, originally by Games Workshop, still available to buy from Amazon but not sure who publishes it now. Very Good system and extremely Dark and Gritty. Anyway, it did have a critical hits system but also a critical miss/fumble system too. It was possible to pin your foot to the ground with your own arrow, most annoying in the middle of a combat. It was also possible to do a number of other equally embarrasing and potentially life threatening critical fumbles to yourself with this system. I remember critically fumbling my attack roll, whilst weilding a 2 handed battle axe and I ended up throwing my weapon away and spraining my lower back, effecting my movement, initiative and further attack rolls. Nightmare !! :D but very funny to hear it described in play....Cheers ! :)

This happens all the time! My group has a weird masochistic streak. Roll a 1 and it is a fumble. Roll to see if you hit yourself or an ally. If you breach their AC, it is a friendly fire hit. I have seen fumble crit on self combos.

I keep trying to talk them out of this as it seems silly that the higher level they get, the more likely they are to fumble and hurt themselves. But, they actually seem to enjoy the threat of hurting themselves.

*sigh* Next campaign I am going to start off with different fumble rules.

With a fumble system I used a while back for Star Wars, we had a player as a Super Battledroid. He was having fun and all...then we get to the first combat.
He rolled...horribly. Its not that he killed himself, but he actually shot himself in the foot...twice in a row. We WERE laughing..even HE was. I think it was just the image of a Super Battledroid aiming down and just shooting itself that made it too good NOT to laugh. :D

Yes. In a RttToEE game I was running, a hobgoblin fighter PC was running low on hit points and an evil cleric cast a random action spell on him. He failed his save, rolled "you attack yourself" then criticalled himself dead. It was deemed "kewlest death evar". :D

Yep, did it in my D&D 3E campaign. We use a fumble system where if you roll a 1, then you've fumbled and dropped your weapon. After that, you roll a 1d4 and a 1d8. The d8 is for direction starting with one as the direction the character is facing and going around clockwise. The d4 is is how far the weapon flys in 5-foot squares. A 1 is the square where the character is standing.

In this instance, it was a battle between my wizardess and her fighter/monk lover against a harpy and a couple hobgoblins with bows. One of the hobgoblins was low on hitpoints and fired at us, rolling the dreaded '1'. The DM rolled and got another '1' on the d4 roll. So he rolled to hit and it beat the AC of the monster. The arrow flew straight up in the air after being misfired and came back down to pierce the monsters brain. It fell dead on the spot. :D

One of my players in my 3E game got a critical hit on himself. I have some critical fumble rules that I use when people roll 1's. Most of the time, nothing happens except you miss, but sometimes, you get something that's either really bad or really funny.

This player rolled the most spectacular string of 1's in a row I have ever seen (6 in a row).

So an arrow that he fired bounced off the floor, the opposite wall, the ceiling, the wall behind and hit him in the back. When he hits, he gets Max Damage on the crit, doing 95 points of damage, almost killing his character in one single hit. He did make the fortitude save for massive damage though, so his bad luck streak did come to an end.
