[Amusing] Critical Hit on Yourself...?

I'm assuming then that you've never played Rolemaster. Fumble rules are like playing with sticks - funny until someone loses an eye. I once had a Rolemaster character which I was quite fond of die via falling on his own sword. And then there was the time that I fired into melee (well through melee actually, but that's another story) in a calculated risk and put a crossbow bolt into the back of a friends favorite (possibly ever) character's head - needless to say he wasn't happy and the combat went on to be a TPK.

Sometimes I really don't miss those days of Rolemaster.

I hate fumble rules. I'm useless enough as it is with my poor rolls-- I don't want to be actually counter-productive.

Also, in games like D&D, the feeling of competence in your character is very important. You're heroic, powerful, skilled. You shouldn't be hitting your friends and shooting yourself in the foot. (As a matter of fact, I can't think of a game where that kind of thing suits the mood properly.)

And the ricocheting arrow thing is grounds for slapping the DM. Just reaching over and slapping him. That's the sort of thing that gets you laughed at when you try to do it to an enemy-- what makes it appopriate for a fumble?

In my old 1e campaign the party was in Nulb in the original ToEE and there was a thief trying to get two separated party members drunk before robbing jumping them. I meant it to turn out "he draws his dagger with lightning speed and stabs you in the back while you are drinking at the bar!" but he rolled a one. I was using critical hits and fumbles from Best of Dragon and rolled attack self. He hit and scored a critical hit. The result was severing his hand.

The PCs, who figured out the thief's plan early on but were still surprised by the sudden attack, thought this was hilarious.

Sorta close, but equal in hilariousness. :D

A player in one of my early 3E campaigns wasn't so good at his checks on creating items, and I was feeling rather RBDM - so I let his item still be created. It was supposed to be a shield that gave some sort of Protection from Missiles effect, I can't really remember.

But I do remember that I made it a Missle Attractor, and no, not one of these "Every missile has a 50% of having the shield-bearer as it's target", but one of the 2E "Every #*&$ missile withing a 500ft. radius will hit this shield" ones.

So, a while later, during a massive ground battle, it was hilarious when all the arrows the opposing army shot turned, en masse, and fell upon the shield. It was a tower shield, and the PC hasily got under it, but-

Have you ever heard rain on a tin roof? :D

heh, that's cool. see, now I'd use that to my advantage! sounds like a great way to render an opposing army's archers useless to me! :D ... hmmmm i wonder if there's anyway to mess that roll up on purpose? :p

Closest thing I have is; once in a Living Greyhawk game, my character got dominated by a vampire and attacked a party member. Of course I had to roll my crit at that point. Of course I also happen to use a heavy pick (x4). He went down, but didn't die.

I had a halfling rogue in D&D and I ended up cutting my legs off with my own trap. Does that count? Needless to say, it was a horrible game for me...imagine being joggled around strapped into a huge brute's backpack while the rest of the party dodges monsters and gets lost in a dungeon....they ended up crafting a skateboard-like contraption which they strapped me to so I could roll ahead of them and check for traps...and I was forbidden to make any more traps myself! <sigh>

So one of the players fired a missile at an enemy ship. This was his first action of combat. He then proceeded to roll , well, really bad for the rest of combat. The combat went on a fairly long time.

Several times throughout the combat , the missile flew by the target and missed each time. So, finally, the player rolls good and blows up the ship himself with his ships blasters.

Now, because the missile no longer had a target it locked onto him (pure bad luck). He rolled to see if it would hit him. He rolled a critical hit for 106 points of damage (he had 120 HP).

It destroyed his shields and pretty much fried all his systems...

We didn't *want* to laugh...

Anyone else ever have something like this happen in any game?

This reminds me of a real life experience told to me by a Vietnam veteran. He was a Navy pilot flying a Phantom.

One day, he tries to engage a MIG 21 with a Sidewinder missile. Now, in the Vietnam era, missiles like the Sidewinder and the Sparrow were not as technologically advanced as today and had a high miss / high failure rate.

The way a Sidewinder fires is that it drops from the wing pylon and the rocket motor fires a half second later. The drill for the pilot on firing the missile is to immediately perform a right or left 'break' turn.

On this occasion, in his excitement, he fired the missile and then pulled high in an attempt to keep his nose on the MIG, who did a sudden climb.

The Sidewinder didn't light off within 1/2 sec as it was supposed to - it lit off after a few seconds.

The first thing the seeker head picked up was the hot exhaust of a Phantom jet, which was now in front of the missile.....

He only got one kill in the war..... and it was his own plane. :p

I think that rates as a critical hit.
