This is so completely apples and oranges that I have no idea what point you are making.

I'm going to hazard a guess that not a single person thought that the cartoon avatars for Gorillaz were the actual musicians.

The art wasn't the music and lyrics produced, it was the act of creating a totally virtual and bland band and have it reach such a number of listener as a reflexion on the taste of the masses. The message is more important than the result. I once attended a performance where the artists rolled themselves nude in a tub full of very cheap industrial pork pâté, it's not the "sculpture" that resulted of their act that is the art piece (though it was actually for sale), it's the creative process and the message they sent.

The lyrics actually make some amount of sense and aren't worse that some of the human-produced slop we hear sometimes. I guess they cherry-picked the result.
