I am still in the hope that mankind will one day meet with some alien specie from another stellar system. But as much I believe that mankind will one day colonize Mars, as much I fear that encountering alien may never happen at all. There are so many problems for that. Just let me recount you the story of an alien visitation on Earth...
1 -- Almost 40 light years away from the sun was a planet inhabited by an intelligent alien specie: the Xharl'dh. Biologically speaking the Xharl'dh were extremely different from any Earth mammals. For example, one of their differences was that their metabolism was incredibly slow when compared to life forms on Earth. That is, what a human being would be able to do in 1 hour, the Xharl'dh would do it in 20 hours. But that wasn't a problem, since all organisms were likewise slow on their planet.
2 -- Anyway, the Xharl'dh had benefited from miraculously appropriate circumstances to evolve a technically advanced civilization. At some point they had detection devices so evolved, that they could scan the galaxy in search of planets with life forms. Hence the first planet with a thriving life that they discovered, was Earth. Yet, their civilization took another 4000 terrestrial years to develop the technology that would be able to cross the stars and visit us. But they eventually did it, in lauching three Xorialu super-cruisers toward the Sol system. These starships were unable to travel faster than light speed, but with their slow metabolism, the 40 years trip seemed much shorter (especially as at such speed, the time also dilated so it seemed even shorter).
3 -- When the Xharl'dh discovered Earth, they were amazed and under shock! The planet was thriving with a life that moved and grew with monstrous speed, and had incredibly short lifespans as a result. Then, despite observing this planet was really of utmost interest, they wouldn't personnaly land on it, as it was intolerably hot with a poisonous atmosphere. The Xharl'dh nonetheless sent a probe, and collected a huge amount of plants, and several species of dinosaurs.
4 -- Then, the Xharl'dh got back to their homeworld. Due to their decidedly non-human way of thinking, they never got the idea to come back to Earth. Then time passed, and after 20 millions of (terrestrial) years, as everything will disappear sooner or later, the Xharl'dh disappeared. Another 45 millions of (terrestrial) years passed, and all that was left of the Xharl'dh and their civilization, was huge amounts of a strange substance that was slowly created from their remains, as oil results from the remains of dinosaurs and jurrasic flora.
5 -- In 2648, a human starship manned with robots reached the planet that was a so long time ago inhabited by the Xharl'dh. They extensively explored the planet and discovered vast amount of a strange substance that was similar to oil. Maybe it could be exploited and used in industrial facilities?
