Andre (Alice) Norton Books?

So I'm reading all of the old AD&D DMG recommended reading list (Appendix N) in honor of EGG. I'm looking at Andre Norton's entry (just the name, no specific works listed) and her bibliography (with like 100 works in it) and I need to narrow it down some.

Basically, I'm looking for a few good standalone works and maybe a series. Recommendations?

For fantasy written by Andre Norton, you should probably start with Witch World and then go on to the various sequels (Web of the Witch World, Three Against the Witch World and so on). In my estimation, the earlier books are better than the later ones, but they are all at least good. Quag Keep is pretty good too, and has the distinction of being the first D&D tie in novel, although it has an odd take on the game and Greyhawk. The Magic in Ikthar series and the Magic series (Steel Magic, Octagon Magic, Lavender-Green Magic and so on) are decent too.

A lot of her other stuff is more science fiction than fantasy, but still good.

Indeed. Second recommendation for Witchworld and Quag Keep. Although Quag Keep is pretty hard to come by these days. There is also a recent sequal, Return to Quag Keep, but I haven't read it yet.

Other good ones I remember reading, The Zero Stone, The Trillium books, and of course The Beast Master.

I really liked The Zero Stone as well as its sequel Uncharted Stars. The Beast Master and its various sequels were good too. However, those are science fiction, and not fantasy, so I figured I wouldn't bring them up. I could easily make a list of thirty Andre Norton science fiction titles to recommend if I wanted, but that probably isn't what the OP wanted.

Wow, the Witch World series seems to have quite a few books in it. Maybe I'll track down a copy of Quag Keep and then tackle the other if I have time. There's over a hundred books in the project already, and while I'm about a third done so far, so is the year...

Hmm, good point. Well The Trillium is fantasy, so it wasn't a total wash.

Her Solar Queen novels are one of my favorite sci-fi series. I'd recommend them highly.

Much of her other stuff I can take or leave. Often, her writing gets just a bit too loopy for me... It ends up being too much weirdness for weirdness's sake. The Witch World books, for example, I had a hard time staying interested in. But that's just me.

The first five Witch World are:
Witch World
Web of the Witch World
Three Against the Witch World
Sorceress of the Witch World
Warlock of the Witch World

If after the first five you're still interested, then try some of the many others. A good number of them are prequels that deal with the Witch World prior to the events in the first books.

Another recommendation: Huon of the Horn which is her version of the Song of Roland.

One thing to keep in mind - her books are what used to be called Young Adult, aimed at teenagers. That's not everyone's cup of tea, but I still enjoy her stuff, three decades after I first read one of her books.
