Andy Collins speaks - Upcoming Products

Most of Wizards' releases for the first third next year are very odd. They're trying new things, but that takes them outside of my comfort zone. I'm used to D&D-style fantasy, and now they're doing some different things. "I want my lucky blanket!!!" ;)

OTOH, Wizards are trying new things. :)

Oy, you said it. I think I like the idea, in theory. I've gotten pretty jaded to new products, having a bit of "crunch overload". The very fact that I'm even remotely interested in some of the books really speaks volumes.

I'd forgotten about some of the adventures/locations being skirmish-ready. That might actually make a sale. My wife and I occasionally break out the minis and actually play a battle. Mostly, I get them for the D&D side of things, but if I've got the minis rules, and they're at all entertaining, why not use 'em.

Exactly! :)

I've been asking myself lately why I would want to buy any more new D&D books. I've been around long enough that a lot of what was being put out wasn't all that new. It was just the same-old, same-old that I had seen in prior editions.

I want new ideas, new concepts, and not the same old D&D stuff I've seen for years now. I feel like Magic of Incarnum is on the right track with that. The new Tome of Magic doesn't really touch on new concepts per se, but it is something new and different for D&D.

And hey, I'm always a sucker for all things psionic. ;)

So I think this is a positive trend. I'm hoping to see it continue.

I'm looking foreward to MoE and PGtE. :)

Magic of Incarnum sounds very interesting. I'm sure I'll be picking that one up when I can.

I'm also excited about the new adventures. I didn't think we would see any new adventures from Wotc for a long time.

I have not reached crunch overload yet, so perhaps I'm not as jaded as some folks. Jeez, I'm still trying to work the 'Complete..' books into my budget. I do see a lot of cool products on the horizon, but right now I'm just trying to keep up with recent and current releases.

Well from the little thingy on the WOTC website it looks like Magic of Incarnum is basically just going to be all about a new magic item/substance, rather than like a new magic system or form of magic. Thats not terribly interesting to me.

Ebberon isnt really inherently interesting to me either. I do wonder, however, what interesting things might be in a 3.5 Tome of Magic. I mean most of the spells in their are actually in the 3.x PH, and most of the others have been put in other books. The Wildmage was in Complete Arcane.

I wonder if they might try to do an actual Elementalist class or prestige class. I also wonder if they might introduce some deccent rules for coperative/group spellcasting

Err... where do you get this? It's pretty much spelled out in the preview here:

The text of the book likens the use of incarnum to that of the psionics rules -- it's a new system that's similar to magic, but different.
From what I'm seeing, it's a resource management approach to magic. Look at the way the feats describe investing essentia. You get an effect from the investment, but the investment is "locked" for 24 hours. My understanding is that the base and PrC "incarnum classes" will be able to do the same thing, but can re-allocate how the essentia is invested, sometimes even round to round, making them much more flexible. Add in the soulmeld idea - semi-permanent items created pretty much on the fly - and sounds like you got a new system to me.
