Members of cultures aren't monolithic in their beliefs and by what they take offense to.

Cultures are complex and conflictive. That is why it is so important to understand what is going on in a culture, before borrowing from it.

A person who is intimate within the culture has a better sense of what is important and what is debatable − in context with all of its nuances

In the article about Avatar The Last Airbender, even tho the authorship was mainly "white", the show was appealing to Asian audiences. The secret was the intimacy that the authorship had with Asian history. The historical conflicts inspired Avatar stories that felt familiar and realistic. History displays the conflicts within a culture and between cultures. The context matters, because the context determines the meanings. Sometimes subtle nuances matter alot.

I don’t agree that I need to grok an entire culture before borrowing something. I mean, some reseach is good before you use that broken cross thing as a t-shirt logo. But not being fully intimate with it.

I dont expect to change your mind.

Nevertheless censorship is happening, whether you like it or not.

Internet media are under increasing pressure to censor "hatespeech" and "disinformation".

I feel we need to come up with policies as soon as possible that are as fair as possible to everyone.

Before it is too late.

There has to be a reasonable negotiation between nothing and anything.

Aren't there already a bunch of limits on free speech, in the cases of obscenity, fraud, child pornography, speech integral to illegal conduct, speech that incites imminent lawless action, speech that violates intellectual property law, true threats, and commercial speech such as advertising?*

Is fake news to make a profit or benefit oneself close to fraud? Is hate speech by some actually stochastic terrorism and thus close to inciting imminent lawless action?

I feel one can become intimate with a specific tradition within a culture, and borrow that specifically.

For example, earlier Panda-s1 mentioned it is ok to borrow tropes from Asian pop culture. But not to cross the line to the point of misrepresentation.

We can make characters based off tropes from Asian media and have fun with them, it's when we start portraying Asian culture at large where it becomes concerning.

Which seems like an other way of saying, dont portray something that one doesnt know about.



Consider a baseball team that used reallife cultural names of Native Americans, and appropriated reallife sacred symbols. In fact, failure to "grok" the culture turned out to be a big problem.

Defamation is illegal. Enforcing it more aggressively and consistently effectively censors much of the hatespeech online.

If there's real harm done or is likely be done, it's not legal. You can't yell fire in a crowded theater, because it would cause a panic and actual physical harm to people. Child porn causes harm to the kids. Inciting riots causes physical and financial harm. They key there is real harm(physical or financial), not just something offensive. For instance, you can show naked children if it's art. I don't like it and that would offend me, but it's legal free speech.
