It's just like the popular introduce a new character and have them tragically die in the same episode after becoming chummy with the main chacter plot.
Hasn't Wes been pining over poor Fred since she was introduced? I know I certainly felt that the Fred-Wes got together it was something that didn't need to be developed over a few episodes. The feelings were already there.
As for doing the good "innocence gone evil" thing being over done. I don't think it's old. It seems that this is a bit different and Cordy and Fred are two separate individuals (I always liked Fred better). I think it will be a good way to end the series.
