angel/buffy continuity question

quick query since I'm not fully up to date on either show... In a prechip "Spike" ep of Buffy, the gang ends up in possession of a very powerful (?)ring(?) which renders a vampire immune to their normal weaknesses (sunlight, staking, etc), and buffy pretty much says that she is sending it to Angel in LA to help him in his work. I don't THINK any further mention of it was made on buffy, and I haven't caught any references on the older Angels I've seen. So I was wondering, did it just get dropped? Did it make it to angel then get stolen/have side effects/stop working? Just thinkign about random vamp stuff and it occured to me that a handy little item dropped off the radar.

The Gem of Amara - it was dealt with in an early episode of Angel called In The Dark (1x03). This is a great episode for a number of reasons, one of them being Spike has some terrifically snide commentary about Angel.

Hopefully someone can give you a fuller answer, but I do remember the ring making into an episode of Angel. IIRC, a murderous vampire got a hold of it at one point, Angel stopped him, used the ring one day, then decided to give it up. Don't remember for certain, but I think he destroyed it because it was too powerful to have in the world.

Episode 3 of Season 1, "Into the Dark". Buffy sends Oz to give the Ring of Amara to Angel in L.A. Spike finds out, and seeks out the ring. hilarity ensues. Eventually, a guy named Marcus gets the ring, and Angel beats him, gets the ring and then destroys it.

His justification is 1) as long as it exists, every vampire in existence will eventually come after Angel to get it and 2) it's a cheat on the Shanshu prophecy and 3) he doesn't want to walk in thel ight and forget his msision.

Not sure I really buy into the justification, but they did deal with it.

I'd excise point number two there, as they don't learn about the Shanshu prophecy until the end of season 1 ("To Shanshu in L.A.").
