Antimagic Field and the problems it causes

Antimagic field gives rise to some odd rules situations. For example, we have a mage with antimagic field standing 30’ from a spiked chain wielding fighter using Shapechange to become a titan. The spiked chain increases in size via the Shapechange spell, so our fighter now has a reach of 30’ or so. What happens when the fighter (who is not in the AMF) swings his chain at the mage? Does the end of the chain shrink when it gets within 10’ of the mage and the rest of the chain stays the same outside the AMF? Is the chain unaffected since its wielder is not in the AMF and the magic on him is causing the chain’s size to be larger?

I would assume the Chain merely shrinks upon entering the field, and resumes normal form when leaving the field.
