If the Sorceror had arcane preparation, and was thus able to memorize/prepare spells, why couldnt he use lucubration, or rary's mnemonic?

The level of Magic Missile is Sor/Wiz 1. The level of Scorching Ray is Sor/Wiz 2. The level of Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer is not Sor/Wiz 4; it is Wiz 4, and carries a [Wizard only] note in the 4th level short list.

Perhaps a Sorceror, then, can use his primarily drawn from clause to learn it, if he can prepare arcane spells? ;)

The sorcerer is as eligible to learn the wizard's Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer as he is to learn the bard's Cure Light Wounds.

However eligible that might be determined to be.

From the rules quote above, it seems he is quite eligible.

Extra Spell seems stronger than I thought for a Sorceror. Extra Spell: Resurrection, or Extra Spell: Miracle seem really cool. =)

Off the top of my head, Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer is the only one I can think of.

In response to several posts along the same lines. Rary's is not on the Sorcerer/Wizard list, it is just on the Wizard list. That means that it is not a spell on the Sorcerer/Wizard list that sorcerers cannot pick, it is not a spell on the Sorcerer/Wizard list at all.

It's debatable. It appears on the short list of 4th level Sorcerer/Wizard spells, with a [Wizard Only] note.

Text overrides tables. The text of the spell says Wiz 4 and not Sorc/Wiz.

Of course even with that the wizard only note makes the debate of the table even less useful as it is already called out to be not on the sorcerer/wizard list even there.

Yup, and that indicates that Wizards can cast the spell.

LEVEL
The next line of a spell description gives the spell’s level, a number between 0 and 9 that defines the spell’s relative power. This number is preceded by an abbreviation for the class whose members can cast the spell.

But 'the spell lists of the spellcasting classes' are found at the beginning of chapter 11.

The 'Wiz 4' in the spell description is indicating something different to the spell list, so 'Text overrides tables' is irrelevant in this case - it describes who can cast the spell, not on which class's spell list it appears.

So, Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer is a 4th level spell that can be cast by wizards, and it is found on the 4th level Sorcerer/Wizard spell list, with a Wizard only note.
