Any Bola House Rules?

are there any variant rules for bolas?
i want halflings to use them, but a trip attack isnt going to be too useful against medium/large creatures (horses)

maybe something that doesnt rely on a halflings low strength?
if i can find my 2ed books i might use those rules, i'd have to figure out called shots somehow, but they let you tangle legs, arms, or attempt a strangle

anyway, does anyone modify bolas?

My Bola house rules don't use the trip rules. Instead the Bola allows a ranged grapple attempt.

Make a ranged touch attack. If you hit, make a grapple check against the target (treat the bolas as one size larger than you). If you succeed the target is grappled and falls prone. The target may use grapple or escape artist checks to attempt to break free, or may attempt to cut their way out if they have an edged weapon. The bola doesn't make a fresh grapple check each time, it just keeps it's original check.

I made the bolas an exotic weapon, with a range increment of 15ft.

I wonder though, if you don't mind a critisism or two, if instead of using size modifiers - the grapple check could gain some manner of bonus derived from your attack roll modifier instead? Something like your Dex bonus, since it is a ranged weapon?

I like the grapple attempt. But the trip is also fun. Make it do both, you throw it, making a trip attempt, and if the trip succeeds, it makes a grapple attempt. Chances are you might just trip them, but a few good rolls and the target is screwed (for a short time, at least)
