Any female game masters?

My wife is presently DM of our weekly group. She run's on average one module a year for the group.

At a fast count, I know somewhere between 15 and 20 female DMs.
Yes, and of those, your wife KidCthulhu is in my opinion the best game master who I have ever gamed with.

did they provide any advice on running a game for the first time? it's been decades since I last ran a game and I'll be running my first one this weekend. while most of the other players have casual experience with dnd 3.5 (one's one of my DMs, too!), my SO, who hasn't played since basic d&d (before 1e!) will be joining. and I'm used to tactical/powergamers. Yikes!

Not really. They just kinda said, "be prepared". Dad is an OVER prepared DM. I was looking at his notes and he has EVERYTHING written down, NPC stats, monster stats, xp stats, traps, everything. In the same way, my BF had all his pages marked for quick flipping thru the books. I'm doing a mixture of both. I'm also rolling HP and stats for NPCs and Monsters ahead of time. It helps, though, that I have a until the 21st to get everything ready. lol.

can't wait to read how it goes.

i was both underprepared and overprepared for last week's game. underprepared because my npcs were far more complex, mechanically, than i realized. same with the optional rules i had installed. and i didn't have enough chances for social rpging. my adventure, though, had plenty of combat opportunity which i (thankfully!) was able to cull once the hour passed 11 PM :o damn! dnd 3.x combat can be long!

Ya, the NPC's and monsters are a lot more complex that I had thought too. I was smart and met with all my players this week and made sure their characters were up to code. That'll take alot of time off the first game. :) Now I just have to write everything up for the campaign by Friday...

I'm a woman and I've been DMing for our group steadlly since about 1985. Before then I ran occasional campaigns and one-offs. I think I ran my first game in about 1978. It may have been Gamma World...

Anyway, for new GMs, overpreparation is gonna be where it's at. I suggest using modules - er, published adventures for the first few things you run. Even if you don't want to use the campaign world they're set in, using a pre-written adventure gives you some really good structure. You'll learn where the author was good - where the adventure flows well - and you'll find out what your strengths in running the game are, before you try to write your own.

But remember; if you relax, tell a good tale, give your PCs plenty of room to make the story their own, and enjoy yourself, the players will have a good time and all will go well...

One of my first ever DM's was a woman - and a ROCKIN' one at that (and no, I'm not talking about what she looked like when I say rockin' - I'm talking about her DM-fu); she's actually the person who inspired me to become a better DM - much to the delight/dismay for my many players over the years.

Of note as well, I've only had a couple of games over my past 20+ years of DMing that did not have at least one female in the group. I guess I've been blessed that way...

While there are clearly women who post, and a reasonable number of female gamers (albeit a minority overall), how many of you have seen women actually running games? Any Ms. DMs?
I've played under two female DM's, and had three more female gamers in my games who DM regularly themselves (but I wasn't in their games), and know two more female GMs who I haven't gamed with but I know one runs an ongoing campaign and the other runs a lot of one-shot sessions.

Male GM's are more common, but then again male gamers are more common. In my personal experience, female gamers are as likely to be GM's as male gamers.

Currently playing in a Star Wars Saga Ed. campaign run by a female DM, which has been a blast. She's planning on a Warhammer Fantasy RPG game as well, which if the SWSE game is any indication, it'd be peerless as well.
