1. Make sure the walls are clean (a product like TSP, available at any paint store, works well).

2. Prime if there is any residue of old stains taht might bleed through.

3. Mask off EVERYTHING you don't want paint on. Bluetape is great, and comes in various widths.

4. Really, cover everything.

5. Do cut in the edges first. Makes a big difference. Use a good brush of the right kind for the paint you're using. Use a roller that is appropriate for the type paint to roll the large areas. Forget all the silly edging tools; use a good narrow brush and you'll be happier.

6. Buy an extension roller and paint the ceiling. I suggest doing it first. COVER EVERYTHING

7. Be prepared to clean up as you work. Keep plenty of drop cloths, damp rags and/or sponges, an extra brush or two, and other cleanup tools handy. Hot soapy water.

8. Wear old clothes. OLD ones. That you don't want any more. Did I tell you to cover everything? And don't wear your nice leather SAS tennis shoes.

Sorry for sounding like a mother. I've painted my whole house. A couple of times. My husband sells paint for a living...
