The fly spell only gives you Good maneuverability, so you cannot take 5ft-steps upwards while flying. You can only take a 5ft-step up if you have perfect maneuverability.kjenks said:Cast Swift Fly then make a 5-ft. step straight up.

As far as I know using a free action doesn't protect you from AoO.
I think it wouldn't hurt and we allow it in our group, but it's not RAW as far as I know.
I agree with that. You just can't go up.DanMcS said:You can take a 5' float sideways with a fly spell. Cast defensively, 5' float to the side, move action to stand up.
Worked for me, anyway.
DanMcS said:That rule was originally written in the 3.0 epic level handbook, when standing from prone didn't provoke an AoO, it just cost a move action. It got transcribed into Complete Adventurer without any updating, but I'm pretty sure that was an oversight. I would have no problem ruling that the free stand doesn't provoke.
Hypersmurf said:Complete Adventurer, in fact, specifically states "This use of the skill still provokes attacks of opportunity as normal."
