Any way to have a paladin special mount be something else?

Question

First Post
Is there any way to have the paladin's special mount be something other than a warhorse, etc? Something along the lines of a unicorn for example.

Yes. Check the DMG. IDHMBIFOM, so I can't give you a page number, but there's a specific section on different special mounts.

Splatbooks and PrC's have additional information. IIRC, for example, Sandstorm lists some alternative choices in that climate. Sorry for the lack of specific information.

I see it, page 200 of the DMG.

Im kind of confused by what it means by combine. So would a paladin need to take the leadership feat in order to have, say, a unicorn as her mount?

Yes, the Paladin would need to take the leadership feat in order to have the unicorn as her mount. And when figuring out what ECL the Unicorn is for purposes of leadership, you'd add +2 to its ECL for the extra abilities of being a paladin mount.

Draconomicon and Book of Exalted Deeds have some stuff for you, if I recall correctly.

Im kinda confused, how do the extra HD, etc work out with the special mount then?

A cohort would normally be up to 2 levels below your level.

The special mount gives your mount extra HD depending on your paladin level. Would they count for the up to 2 levels, etc thing?

So a level 20 paladin......+8 HD for a unicorn........if we say LA is bumped up to +6 for being a special mount, that would make it a 12 HD unicorn, with +6 LA, under the cohort rules. Then the +8 HD would make it 20 HD with +6 LA?

I believe you take a standard unicorn, figure out its ECL, and then add 2 to the ECL for the paladin mount benefits. You'd only pay extra ECL for extra HD not granted by the Paladin mount benefits.
