Anybody Already Starting their Ten-Page Fantasy Setting

Not quite yet

I haven't quite yet, but I am hammering the deities etc in my head. I am going with a trinity model and servants granting the spells etc as opposed to the deities themselves as they are very aloof compared to even Greyhawk. Should be intriguing.

My question is have any of you developed new mechanics for your setting, like how magick works or some such? I have a few in mind like ley lines and such.

On the first I've got about 2200 words on 2 and a fraction pages (10 point Times New Roman). I tighten up the spacing on some lines I should be able to get about 1000 words per page (kerning, the layout artist's best friend:)).

get started?

I already have new races, monsters, spells, prestige classes, gods, history, nations and two templates... as well as a unique magic system that easily fits into any fantasy style genre... like a lot of other DMs.

If I get word that one of my submissions were acepted, I hope I can fit most my pre-generated ideas in their format without much adjustment. That way I can concentrate on polishing my writing, rather than trying to work from scratch.

I may be well-prepared, but, my ideas stil have to grab the reader's attention, otherwise, only my players, my girlfriend and the mothballs in my closet will get a chance to "enjoy" my stuff.

Carpe Diem everyone, good luck on the 1, 10 and the 100 pager!

. . .

I'm going to wait a week or two.

I had to chop to 1200 words so its not as if i've not done enough planning.

Coming back to in in 2 weeks i'll get a fresh look on my ideas, easily spotting the 'WTF was i Thinking!!' type history/background/continental mistakes that dont cut it in a 10 pager.

What would you expect in a 10 pager?

Historical Background
Kingdom Structures
Major Societies
Magic Background
Villian Networks
Hero Networks
Topic(s) of your choice

Thats 6 pages + 4 pages to spread among the topics, creating topics at the bottom for any specific unique topics that need mentioning.

What else am I missing?

No, I haven't. I doubt I'll develop the world further if it doesn't get selected. I would love to, but I just don't have the time to play another campaign in addition to the two I'm already playing... and I don't want to detail a world I won't be able to use.

...of course, when the ten lucky ones will have been announced and I (likely) won't be among them, I'll post the one-pager here somewhere. Who knows, if I get a lot of positive feedback I might be convinced to develop it further.

ROTFLMAO! I was JUST about to start this thread!

Besides, if I DO make it to the 2nd round, I want to be ready. The 2nd round submission is due July 31st, after all! How they expect to whittle thousands of submissions down to ten, and expect those ten people to turn in 10-page submissions within little over a month I have no idea, but there it is.

That's more than enough time. Writers are typically expected to turn out 1,000 words a day. I have a personal hunch that a lot of round two and round three is going to be seeing who can actually produce stuff versus who just "talks big".

Round one is to see who has a fresh idea and who can follow simple directions.

Round two has such a short span to see who can put out material quickly.

Round three is for content.

At least, that's how I see it. Of course content is important in al three.

I agree with you on rounds two and three, but I think Round one has to be revised to "Some incredibly lucky git, who incidently has a fresh idea and can follow simple directions."

I hate to sound like an idealist, but I have a feeling that the ten winners of round one will be those who have the best ideas AND can communicate it brilliantly.

It's not a lottery. They will pick the ten best (and they've got a little leeway if there are only 8 best or there are 12) submissions based on some probably well-thought out criteria.
