Anyone got Dungeon 139 yet?

If this is the way things are Piazo better rename this The Savage Tide of Free XP

HA!

Actually, those are excellent examples of how the CR system doesn't work that well, and why it's usually best NOT to assume that just because something is rated at CR 5 doesn't mean it's as tough as another CR 5. A 20th level human commoner and a very old blue dragon are both CR 19 monsters, by the book. They're obviously not the same challenge. The CR system is anything but perfect.

The CR 3 monster's ability scores do use the elite array. In fact, his Charisma score is a little higher than it should be (a case where I Ad Hoc bumped his Cha up by a little to fit his character; it doesn't really increase his threat level at all). His stats aren't number-crunched, sure, but that was a conscious design decision to make him smarter instead of faster.

And fighter or ranger would have been FAR too tough for that encounter; instead, I went with an elite warrior. Makes him tough enough that he can boss around his underlings with ease, but not too tough for a group of 1st level characters to fight.

If it makes you feel better, consider that the "bonus XP" one might get for defeating an NPC that isn't number-crunched to be the best he can be comes from a story reward for defeating key NPCs.

In any case, my design philosophy of "Not every NPC needs to be adjusted to be the toughest NPC he can possibly be" is obviously not for everyone. If you want tougher NPCs, you can certainly adjust them as appropriate—that's the best part about being a DM! :)

Ugh... talking around the subject sucks. How does that spoiler trick work? I assume it's painfully simple to do...

another good way to figure out how someone did something is to use the Quote button underneath their post. this will show you any codes they used, and make note of this for further reference. :)

So I got mine from my FLGS today and I'm flipping through, looking for my favorite iconic cleric of Wee Jas, when I notice something. That ain't her. In fact I don't recognize any of the faces for the Savage Tide adventure and then I get the bright idea to take a closer look at the cover art.

Do we get new iconics with every new adventure path? The old ones turn up in the following adventure, so I'm curious if we'll see two different sets in future Dungeons.

Sigh ... still waiting (though I did get Dragon #348 last week, which shipped a week after Dungeon #139 was supposed to). Need Savage Tide goodness! Emailed Paizo, but no resolution yet.

Edit: Got an email from Paizo today saying they are sending a replacement copy. Thanks Paizo!

I went to my unfriendly LGS 2 days ago and they still didn't have it, so I ordered it from NobleKnight and got it today. I'm looking forward to reading the 3rd installment of Maure Castle: The Greater Halls! :D

Kuntz's Greater Halls are quite cool, a very worthwhile addition to the Maure Castle series. I haven't read the Savage Tide adventure yet, but will hopefully get around to it sooner vs. later.

Gro,

True but I'm looking forward to see how much deeper we can get when Rob does the next one in 2007. (I'm hoping for the family crypts for that one.)

Anyone check out the Savage Tides Players Guide Paizo is offering on their website? I'm waiting for the pdf myself since I can't justify the $5.00 shipping fee.

I asked the owner of the game store I go to and he told me they'd be getting it in, but he wasn't sure when. So if you'd like a hard copy check with your LGS and see if they'll be getting it in.
