Anyone here use Soveriegn stone magic

Ace

Adventurer
I was curious if anyone here used the magic system from Soveriegn stone and codex mysterium?

I was thinking of using it in my next campaign as a replacement for the regular system

Any suggestions on how it plays?

Yes.

I think it works pretty well. At the high end, it's not as powerful, but a higher level mage can cast a lot of lower powered magic spells.

This can cause problems when applied to healing spells. You might have to put a limit on the number of times they'll work (like just once per wound).

It can also get a bit messy keeping track of spell casting totals.

I use it too, pretty much the same results as tj... I like it a LOT better than standard vancian though, mages... well... they just FEEL more magical, somehow.

Healing spells don't heal subdual damage. It is a kind of limit. Above all in the middle of a fight, when the mage takes subdual damage from spellcasting.

Yes, I also use the Sovereign Stone magic system. It ported real well into my world (I call Elemental Mages - Druids and Void Mages - Witches), due to the way I wanted to use the four elements and the Void (which I call the Blight in my world).

I also use the classes in the Sovereign Stone campaign setting to replace the magic-using ones from the PHB.

I do not have complaints yet, but none of my players have taken the plunge yet (out of the 10 PCs in three campaigns, I have 2 Barbarians, 4 Fighters, 1 Monk, 1 Rogue, 1 Archer from Sovereign Stone, and 1 Mounted Warrior from Sovereign Stone). Each party does have a Druid NPC with it. I am very fond of having NPCs join the adventurers, as I usually run small groups of 3 or less PCs. In the 6 PC group I am only using the Druid so I can continue testing the magic system (I figure that if I keep using it, I will be able to find and fix any problems before the PCs start playing a spellcaster).

Overall, I really like it (especially the chapter in Codex Mysterium on creating your own spells - it can be a little hard to understand or create the exact spell you want, but it is still very useful).

Having the spellcasting process use a d20 plus Spellcasting Bonus works real well with designing items/areas/or effects that enhance or diminish casting power, because like combat/skill/save type modifiers I can have modifiers to the Spellcasting Bonus.

I have been interested in how many others may use this magic system, so I will have to keep my eye on this thread.

Also, if anyone has created their own house rules, spells, items, creatures, etc. using this system and would like to share them, I would be very interested. I do not know if you want to post them or send via e-mail, but I am receptive to either forum.

I may post some of my spells (ok, at the moment I have only created an Obscuring Mist-style spell) as I create them.

The Mist Spell

Here is the Mist spell I created with the Codex Mysterium (basically a conversion of Obscuring Mist from the PHB). The description is short and could be enhanced (I must have been in an especially lazy mood when I wrote it up).

If anyone who uses the Sovereign Stone magic system is interested in sharing stuff like this, post a reply and we can start a topic for this in the House Rules forum.

------

Mist

(Weather)

Element: Air/Water

Casting Threshold: 27

Range: Personal

Effect: 30 foot radius cloud, centered on the caster

Duration: 10 minutes

Saving Throw: None

Spell Resistance: Yes

Description: Obscures vision beyond 5'. A moderate wind will reduce the duration by half, a hard wind will disperse the effect in one minute and a large fire will burn the affect away after one round.

I'm using Call of Cthulhu d20 magic in my current campaign (complete with Sanity rules) and it is working well so far. Certainly makes you think twice before casting a spell! :D

Who asked about CoC magic rules, thread hijacker :D

Just kidding, but seriously, can you give me a synopsis of the magic system and how it works within a D&D type game? I do not own the books and have only read a little about the magic system (I remember reading where Monte said it would be suitable to use the magic system in D&D).

Just wondering (not that I would use it, for two reasons - I like Sovereign Stone's system and money limitations).
