Anyone still plays Rokugan/L5R setting?

It would be nice also to hear what other oriental settings are still played and with which rules edition!

I am hoping to run an L5R game (3.5 d20) once my current AoW campaign is ended (I'm playing in it). I'm been staying away from the adventures, but what I've heard and seen while playing makes me want to modify it and run it. To combat the HP creep, I'mthinking about using variant HP rules from UA - not only will it make the game deadlier, but it will restore some of the horror of actually facing down monstrous creatures from beyond.

Still have all my books. I finished running a long Rokugan game that ran from 1st to 20th level, but now I'm running a modern horror game. Might go back to Rokugan after that.

Yes, we "kind of" play it - we've integrated it with our Forgotten Realms campaign universe (swapped out Shou Lung for Rokugan).

If you use the D&D rules, did you update it to 3.5?
Do you use some Oriental Adventures material which isn't officially Rokugani?
1) We're using the D&D rules.
2) 'Mostly' updated to 3.5 (but that's theoretical, as we didn't really change much; just the obvious 3.0isms removed). Certainly not at the level of, say, a Rules Forum denizen would do...
3) Yes, absolutely (most of it, in fact). Very kitchen-sinky (which is our thing, though admittedly not for others. But we don't care about them!).

L5R rules, always. For some reason, I really like the roll and keep mechanic.

Not really. I did pick up a few of the books which have both d20 and d10 mechanic (but that's official Rokugan material). I'm mulling over running another campaign in the near future. I'm thinking I'd like it to have more of a "Samurai Champloo" feel to it.

Rokugan and Kara-Tur are both available as character backgrounds and places to visit in my Spelljammer campaign, although the party hasn't gone to them yet. Crashing three ships ( ) on one planet will do that to you.

The scro IMC also have some pseudo-oriental elements.

I'm almost always playing at least one L5R campaign. Got four L5R GM's on my pool of players, and most of them actually play in all my games. I've GMed a few campaigns using the 2nd ed L5R rules but haven't bought the 3rd ed yet. I've started GMing 7th Sea instead.

I really don't like the D&D rules for Rokugan. And everytime I read or listen that someone is playing an elven Iaijutsu Master from the Crane clan a little portion of my love for the setting dies.

On the other hand, I guess L5R could be easily adapted to True20.

Hang on... western races should just not be possible in Rokugan, no matter the ruleset :) The Oriental Adventures (which is a mix, and not Rokugan) may say that you can play an Elf, but the Rokugan Campaign Setting (the real core D&D books for Rokugan) does not allow it.

Actually, you should break down and buy the d10 L5R rules and see for yourself how much more flavor you get out of the game and setting.

I first played a d20 Iajatsu Master (PrC) Samurai well into Epic levels. Then the DM talked me into trying the L5R system, telling me that the "flavor" was much better. I tried it, loved it, and now I don't want to do a Rokugan game in any other system.

Many may be turned off by how deadly they (Alderac authors) tell you to make the game, but the GM can make it as deadly or liveable as they want.

If nothing else see if you can find the second edition books cheap somewhere. If you like what you read in those then consider 3rd edtion L5R (this is not d20 3E)

Roll and Keep is the mechanic used in the L5R game. Basically you roll a number of dice and keep a certain number of them. The total of the kept dice is summed and compared against a target number.

For example, someone with an agility of 4, fire ring of 3, and kenjutsu skill of 3 could make a katana attack. He would roll 7 dice (agility + skill) and keep 3 of them (his fire ring- which is equal to the lower of his agility and a corresponding mental attribute).

If he meets or excedes his enemies 'Target Number to be Hit' he lands a blow.

Of course there is a little more to it than that, what with raises, etc. (and I'm something of an L5R novice) but this captures the basics of it.
