The question in the title is one thing I'd like to know.
The other is what do people think about the balance of these changes to the spellfire feat:
The max number of spell levels expended per voluntary discharge is 1 per character level.
The reflex save DC changes from a fixed Dc of 20 to the following formula (similiar to the monk's stunning fist formula): 10 + dex modifier + (character level/2) + weapon focus (ray) (if you have it).
Absorbing a spell is changed to a free action that doesn't require a readied action. However, successful absorbtion is no longer guaranteed. The spellfire weilder must make a will save vs. the normal DC of the spell. Success means you absorbed it. Failure means you auto-failed your save (if any) vs. that spell, didn't absorb it, and suffer the full normal effects. Thus, having party members charge you up with their unused attack spells at the end of the day is dangerous.
Absorbing a spell is limited to 1 per round, even though it is a free action. Create a new feat called spellfire reflexes that allows a number of spells per round equal to 1 + your wisdom bonus.
Discharging a bolt is changed to a spell-like ability that provokes an AoO, requires concentration checks just like spells, and is subject to distrubtion just like spells. However, when spell fire is distrupted, it becomes a bolt of whatever power the user intended, but in a random direction. People in line of that random direction (roll a grenade scatter diagram with forward being the direction you intended to shoot it) must make a reflex save of DC 15 or be hit with the haywire bolt. Once it hits someone or reaches its max range, it deals it's damage and stops.
Allow a new category of the feat spell focus for spellfire. That would raise the DC of your spellfire by 2. Possibly add it to greater spell focus also.
Add a new feat to allow absorbtion of spells that aren't directly targeted at you (you're in the AoE). Make that have a prerequisite of spell focus spellfire. Raise the will save DC for absorption of an AoE spell by 2, and the auto-fail of course only affects the spellfire weilder.
Another possibility is to add all the new feats as PrC Spellfire Channeler only feats.
The abilities are intentionally spread out between being based bewtwwn dex, con and wis, to prevent a single high score making you super great.
What balance issues do you guys see with this?
