Anyone Using the Spellcasting Variants in Unearthed Arcana?

Sure. I'm currently playing a spontaneous casting druid. I've got very limited spell choice, of course, which forces me to be extra creative and rely on other things to solve problems. I like it, and I don't think it has been a problem for us.

I'm DMing a group that is using recharge magic, as well as gestalt characters. It's a pretty big headache sometimes but the players love it.

We have a cle/sor, a rog/fig/swash/thief acrobat and a pal/bard. For both the variant rules I have to up encounter levels by about 2-4 levels, for challenging encounters and about 5 for edge of your seat encounters. Last night they had an edge of their seat encounter with a level 15 monk/sor (gestalt).

Our DM is currently considering using the Spell Points system but, at the moment, we're only using the Magic Rating rules. These should really be Core, as far as I'm concerned; I've been using them ever since someone on these very boards suggested exactly this mechanic a couple of years ago.

Oh, and we're also using the 3/day Metamagic thingummy -- but no-one's actually got any metamagic feats... The thought is, maybe this change will inspire someone to finally pick one; in 3+ years, only one spellcaster in our group has ever had one of those feats: my old abjurer with Extend Spell. We've always considered them too expensive for their benefits, both in feats spent and higher spell slots required. Using 3/day without added level slots sounds much more appealing. My new druid is considering Reach Spell or Extend Spell, except they're vying for position against other goodies like Spirited Charge and Weapon Focus: Lance (he's a knight chevalier and his animal companion is his warhorse).

We've been using spell points, 3x/day metamagic and domain wizards and it's been a beautiful experience so far. :D As DM, it adds a little extra for me to do for NPCs/monsters, but it's all good.
