Choosing a new campaign

Have you run SotC previously? 10 aspects seems to be generally considered too many and most of the subsequent Fate systems have cut that number back.

I'm aware. I had independently decided I was going to cut the number back - I don't expect my players would keep them all in mind, and I certainly couldn't remember 50 of the things for compels.

I’d put that in your back pocket and work on it gradually. Unleash it when you AND your players are ready to play more D&D.

Well, at the moment, I expect they're going to choose Lost Colony. It is a mix of familiar and new that I think they'll fine appealing.

If not, they may go for Spirit of the Century, in which case I get to unleash my time-travelling, brain-eating proto-Nazi elves for them to punch...

The last time one of my groups needed to decide on our next game, I made a Qualtrics form with five choices and asked them each to rank them.

The interesting thing was that there was no clear consensus on people's top choices - it wasn't until the second pick that we had a clear winner.

You ever see Shock Waves?

You ever see Shock Waves?

Um.. no. Thankfully, I think.

One time, for a house con, I was planning to run a Fate game, and I went to the Pulp Sci-fi Title-O-Tron for inspiration. It game me something like, "Attack of the Brain-Eaters from Out of Time"...

... and off I went into how the svartalfs of Norse mythology were actually humans from the far future who through disease and evolution developed a nutritional dependency on human brains, and then created a time machine...

I give my players 3-5 choices and let them privately send me their ranked votes.

I usually have 2-3 things I’m working on that I can run on quickly if I need to.

I only provide them choices that I’m interested in running. They’ve made me the prerma-GM so I get decide what I want to work on. They get to pick from those things.

Currently running Arden Vul. I’ve never been hugely interested in mega dungeons but Arden Vul has really surprised me.

Having sent my suggestions around a few days ago, my player's feedback didn't point to a strong consensus, but no significant pushback on any of the options.

So, executive decision time!

I think Spelljammer and Spirit of the Century would both be good fits for the group, overall, but may not fit their particular desires of the moment. I'm going to hold them for a time when they are more aligned with the group's genre itch of the moment.

So, the best bet for us right now looks to be Deadlands: Lost Colony.
