AoO versus own group?

why do I think an AoO cleave thread is about to start :uhoh:

Bah, you are just being paranoid about that Bag Of Endless Kobolds he's holding behind his back. :\

P.S. You need to be careful about constant frivilous threatening people in you party lest you create flanks on them, and other odd Feat related situations.

All Duration: Instantaneous means is that when the spell goes off, it is gone. Meaning, if I Heal an ally 100 points of damage, the enemy can't use Dispel Magic to remove that 100 points of damage. Same thing with Flesh to Stone. The Duration is Instantaneous. Once you turn to stone, you can't use Dispel Magic on it to remove the effect (although you can use Break Enchantment because it has specific wording allowing you to do so).

Keep in mind that that a savvy (or dumb lucky) enemy can exploit the extra threatening zones to gain Flanking.

No, he can't.

When making a melee attack, you get a +2 flanking bonus if your opponent is threatened by a creature or creatures friendly to you on the opponent's opposite border or opposite corner.

Whether you threaten your buddy or not, the enemy doesn't gain flanking unless you are a creature friendly to him.

But once you turn against an ally you would no longer be affected by such spells like Bless and the like (which only affect allies).

I'll post the reason why this diskussion came up after I get some other opinions on this.

BTW: The rules column at wizards.com never mentioned the condition that the one causing an AoO must be an enemy...

It's generally the case in Sage Advice columns, etc. that the term enemy has no in game definition and should not be construed to exclude allies explicitly. It's usually interpreted as the choice of the player. If you do not want to threaten someone, you don't and for that purpose, they are an ally. If you do want to threaten them, you do, and they are an enemy.
