Appendix J: Anime, Manga, & JRPGs

Just sticking to Netflix for no good reason we have quite a rich crop of modern anime, such as:
- Apothecary Diaries: As noted above. Maomao is a young apothecary and poison obsessive who ends up being central to many palace intrigue stories as an expert and investigator. It’s not really clear where the palace and city are, culturally - it’s a mix of East Asian tropes including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean - which I quite like.
- Delicious in Dungeon: Starting out as a cosy story of a D&D party surviving in dungeons by cooking and eating tasty monsters, this story soon takes a left turn into complex fantasy world building about the nature of dungeons and magic.
- Frieren Beyond Journey’s End: Fifty years ago, the elven wizard Frieren was a member of the hero’s party that saved the world; she then thoughtlessly said “see you in fifty years” because to her that was no time at all. She barely meets one of them again before he dies of old age. She deeply regrets this and determines to live life and each day more fully as she travels with her new companions. Recommended.
(The title of this one is really interesting because it’s quite a complex pun as far as I can tell. The title in Japanese is Sousou no Frieren, which means Frieren of the End, more or less; it was reasonable to translate this initially to Frieren at the Funeral, but it also refers to Frieren’s own impressive title among wizards and demons of “Frieren of Endings” or “Frieren the Slayer”.)
- Spy x Family: A really great mixed genre show (comedy, action, family etc). A Western spy in not-East-Berlin has to obtain a family and a child in very short order to infiltrate a private school (not-Eton) and ends up adopting a psychic child and pretend-marrying an assassin. Somehow, only Anya (the kid) knows that her parents have secret lives. Highly recommended.
