Appropriate challenge for 3rd level Gestalt

I have an encounter with a party of 4 (could be 5) 3rd level Gestalt characters with normal 3rd level wealth. They are going up against:



A Frost Giant and some
Winter Wolves


They will have a Firbolg ally to take on the giant while they tackle the winter wolves (cr 5). How many winter wolves do you think would it take to really, really challenge them? Should I treat them at Party level 4 because of Gestalt? ………….Thanks!

Gestalt can be considered somewhere between LA +1 and +2.

I'd say LA +1 at this level (LA +2 at 6th+ maybe, probably even higher at higher levels (i.e. LA +1 per 5 levels?)), so I'd consider them 4th.

What about 6 players at 3rd level? Think it would maybe be +2?

I might throw 4 of them at the players, since they will be rested and prepared for the fight.

With 6 players simply multiply the number of the opposition by 1.5 or add +1 to the CR of a single opponent.
