Aprentance/multiclassing at 1st level

Im not sure where i found it in 3e, but i remember a section that talked specifically about starting first level as an apprentice, so you could be a cleric wizard at first level, but have only some of the starting abilities. i was wondering if you resourceful people out there help me find it in 3.5 and if not there, then in 3e. thanks for any help.

The rules are in the 3rd Edition DMG, either just before or just after the NPC and prestige class descriptions. (Don't have my book to give a page#.) Consensus is that they've been dropped from 3.5-I know I sure haven't been able to find them.

I found it in the 3e DMG but have been unsuccessful in the 3.5 edition. thanks for helping anyway.
