I read about 1-3 books a month,a lot less than I used to read. I just finished Graham Joyce's The Facts of Life, a great book that I'm loath to describe because I think any description would make it sound like The Big Book of Suckitude, which is isn't. And given that Swordspoint is the book club selection here, I'll probably dig up my copy of that and reread it; I loves me some Ellen Kushner.

Eric, I second the advice to slog through the first bit of Perdido Street Station: although the book grabbed me from the first chapter, the prologue was almost unreadable for me. Fortunately, it's also very short; also, and I know this is heresy, if you skip over the prologue until you've read the first four or five chapters, you can then go back and read it and appreciate it a lot more.

I'm about halfway through David Gemmel's Legend right now. It's fun stuff. I picked up The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend a bit ago and really liked it so now I'm reading all of Gemmel's Druss books.

I see he's written quite a bit more fantasy besides the Druss stuff as well. How do those rate?

Re-reading: Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks. It's his first published Culture novel. It makes for interesting reading along with John C. Wright's Golden Oecumene series, since both of them are ostensibly adventures stories set in post-scarcity societies, written from pretty close to opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Reading: Pattern Recogniztion by William Gibosn. Second time I've tried to read it. I keep wishing for Rastafarian space shuttle pilots to show up, or girls with surgicacal implanted sunglasses, or robo-ninja.... It so reminds me of Don Delillo's writing, which should be a good thing, seeing I like Delillo, but I keep getting angry at Gibson for being so studiously [laboriously?] mature. Give me characters named 3Jane living in space mansions called the Villa Straylight, damnit!

On my commute to work I'm listening to an audio version of Phillip Pullman's _The Subtle Knife_ book two in "His Dark Materials" series

In physical paper books I'm in the middle of reading the third Thomas Covenant book, _The Baby Whisperer_ by Tracy Hogg, and _ the Book of Fiends_ by Green Ronin.

This is not to mention the dozens of court cases I read for work.

I recently finished _Rose Madder_ by Steven King, _Mere Christianity_ by C.S. Lewis, and _To Green Angel Tower_ part II. On Audio book I finished _The Golden Compass_ Book 1 of "His Dark Materials".

I'm a bit eclectic in my reading.

The Speed of Dark was amazing, definitely in my top two or three of the past year. Now I'm onto Veniss Undergroud by Jeff VanderMeer.

I read about five fiction books a month. I tend to read in short time periods based on the amount of free time available to me.

I am now reading The Haunted Air by F. Paul Wilson (a Repairman Jack novel). This is a new author for me, and so far, I am enjoying the book (a pleasant surprise).

Done with Veniss Underground. Good but not as good as City of Saints and Madmen. I've been tearing through books this month (my reading is done on the train commute to work, about 20 mins a day, and on the exercise bike, 40 mins at 3 to 5 times per week).

Next up are two massive alternate histories, 1610 by Mary Gentle and Stephenson's The Confusion.

Just finished Wolves of the Calla and The Running Man. About to start UA (D&D books count?). Reading a bunch of short stories for my Literature class.
