Arcane Trickster's Sneak Attack

Dark Dragon

Hi,

the damage of a successful sneak attack made by an arcane trickster begins with +3d6 (at first or second level, not sure about this). And there's NO errata? Or have I missed something? I mean, an assassin starts with +1d6 at first level...

I'd think it's a typo in the trickster's table (and rule it that he'll start with +1d6 sneak attack damage).

Any comments?

I was under the impression that since the pre req for the position of Arcane Trickster was +2d6 from the rogue class. So what it appears to be and "possibly a typo" is that they have added the d6 to the already pre existing +2d6 from the rogue class.

Actually, unless this has been officially changed, I don't think it is a typo. The reasoning behind this is that in the 5(+) levels of a spellcasting class that you need in order to take arcane trickster, you lose 3d6 worth of sneak attack progression. The class does have fairly sttep prerequisites, and does give some pretty big bonuses, but I don't really think that leaving it at the listed progression would be incredibly game-breaking (maybe a nice perk...but having played a rogue/sorceror myself they really don't have a ton of power, and end up being second string at just about everything..)

The Sage has clarified that it was simply a continuity error. The author simply assumed you would take the PrC as soon as possible and, in that case, the sneak attack values would be correct.

He specifically stated that the sneak attack should be +1d6 through +5d6.

The five levels of Spellcasting class you are forced to waste are made up for by the fact that you have 5th level casting ability.
