Could be worse. My pre order date is the 21st. I'm so bummed.
Ew. Time to make a few pity purchases at ye old FLGS. Then beer, so the little mock battles with all your Harbinger and Dragoneye minis make more sense. Um, yeah. I never do that myself. Just a suggestion...

:D

Picked up two cases at my FLGS yesterday. I had pre-ordered.

Preliminary impressions: The silver dragon, aspect of Orcus, and unicorn really stand out to me as looking good. I am especially impressed at the solidity of most of these figures - very few are bent to any significant degree, even the winged ones. The Vrock actually does balance on its own, although it takes up an adjacent space with its wings.

Distribution notes: I appear, on first glance, to be missing five rares (including Drizzt). This is much worse than the Dragoneye randomization, but not as bad as Harbinger. I have two silver dragons, several orc champions, and more than a few aspects of Bane. I am disappointed in the large numbers of orcs and humans in this set, although the Sage and Healer are nice figures that I can see using for noncombat NPCs, the first so far in these miniatures.

The good: Silver Dragon. No contest.
The bad: More orcs than I ever needed.
The ugly: The gravehound. Another dog?

Justinian: I mostly agree. Allow me to share. :)

Just got my 2 cases from Gameoutfitter. One of the cases was badly mangled which got me worried until I tore into the thing and found everything intact. *whew*

Distribution

The same as Dragoneye. I am missing 3 rares out of 2 cases which is exactly the same I was missing from DE. Much better than Harbinger. I can't see it getting much better than this, which is honestly, very good. The rares I am missing are the Paladin of Torm (I wanted this for a PC who is playing a Paladin), Aspect of Bane (no big, but I need it for the set) and the Gauth. On a personal note:

Uncommons: I wish I got a few more elementals (just 2 medium earth and one medium fire), xill, githyanki fighters & yaun-ti purebloods.

I got waaay too many: young minotaurs, evermeet wizards, psychic warriors and human psions. I'm not upset but it would have been cool to have more "critters" like the ones I listed above. :)

The Figures

The most impressive figures from the set, in no order:
Silver Dragon - very cool
Aspect of Lloth - creeeepy
Clay Golem - looks like it should
Unicorn - nice
Hill Giant - about right, looks good. I want more.
Aspect of Orcus - size is good and impressive overall
Vrock - simply odd but looks scary
Graycloak Ranger - really nice looking, especially for a common
Cleric of Lathander - very nice uncommon. They got the look right.
Fire Elemental - so cute
Earth Elemental - looks good next to the large
Githzerai & Githyanki - very well done. Just like the books.
Yuan-ti Pureblood - See Gith, above.
Drow Sergeant - armor looks good, solid uncommon
Ragnara, Psychic Warrior - Just like the book. Cool.

Overall Look: Even the commons look pretty good. Compared to Harbinger and Dragoneye this is an improvement in quality. I am impressed. I want more undead and mooks in general but they will come in future sets. My only real complaint is the Ochre Jelly, it doesn't look all that hot, especially for a rare.

Personal Note: I got FOUR Drizzt *grrrr*, FOUR Red Wizards *guh*, 3 Ochre Jelly, 3 Bone Devils. Not cool.

Breakdown

If I had to give an ENworld 5 point review rating I would give this set the following scores:

Paint jobs - 4/5
Mix of usuable figures for the RPG - 4/5
Skirmish Game - ?? <- means very little to me at the moment
Sculpts - 5/5
Forgotten Realms figs - 4/5 (no Harpers?)
Fiends - 4/5 (I could see taking out a few like the young minotaur and catfolk for a few more actual fiends/devils/etc)

Final Score: 4/5
Distribution is as good as it will get. The sculpts are solid. The paint jobs should improve a bit but are good now. I would give this the same score as Dragoneye with its mix of figures considered.

I'm so happy for ebay. I couldn't care less for the personality miniatures. But I sure do love the monsters (I got to get my hands on some bone devils, it is one of my favorites). I will be buying a good amount of monsters as they all become available in the secondary market.

I have to say, however, that I'm more than a little disappointed in the erinyes. I think I'll just buy some of the Reaver minis and paint them up.

I like these miniatures for the RPG value of them, but I occassionally
play some skirmish games every now and then. This set looks like it greatly
changes the dynamics of the skirmish game.

Gauths and the Ooze add very interesting tactics to the game. The Gauth
is essentially a ranged destroyer. The Ooze is a giant speedbump.

Clay Golems greatly help the CG faction by adding some heavy hitters finally.

Red wizards are POWERFUL casters, and they up the power of other casters in the faction (not many yet, but this could grow quite strong eventually).

The vampire... yikes. Throwing this guy on the field changes the game entirely. Destroyed on rout? Ouch.

Minions and powerful summoning also shows up in this set. There was minor summoning before, but now we're getting some real powerhouses in this area.

I just picked up two packs at the sto' when i picked up the pgtf. I got a silver dragon and a gauth as my rares. The silver dragon really does look good but I find myself really liking the Nothic a lot too. On the down side I got two zhent fighters and the paint job on these (especially the face) seems sloppy. Anyone else notice how much yellow paint seems to be used in this series?

I picked up a case and here are the rares that I got:

2 Silver Dragons
2 Gauths
2 Aspects of Lolth
2 Bone Devils
1 Unicorn
1 Human Cleric of Bane
1 Drizzt
1 Paladin of Torm
1 Aspect of Orcus
1 Red Wizard
1 Clay Golem
1 Ochre Jelly

While I really like all of these, I also wanted a Vrock. Bad. :( Like the other posters have said, the quality has improved and the price stayed the same. Can't beat that...
