Archspell Question

I have a question about the level 30 Archmage ability, Archspell. It says "Choose one daily spell that you know. You can now cast that spell as an encounter spell (rather than as a daily spell)."

Does this effectively give you an extra power, or does it replace your level 29 daily? Let's say I choose Legion's Hold to be my encounter spell, can I still prepare Greater Ice Storm, or is that daily spell slot now gone?

I'd assume that, as long as the Arch'd spell is prepared, it's an encounter spell. However, you could still prepare a different Daily in that slot (but you couldn't use the Arch'd spell at all until you re-prepared it). Naturally, most people wouldn't prepare a different Daily very often.

Note that this circumstance already occurs with Utilities, which can be an at-will, encounter or daily (and the Wizard gets to prepare those too).

I would rule that one of your dailies now becomes an encounter power. So you loose a daily but gain an encounter power. I really don't think you get an encounter power (of daily 'strength') and get to choose another daily in it's place.

mach1.9pants is correct as far as I understand. The daily power is not replaced nor does the new encounter power replace something else. You simply have an extra encounter power and one less daily power.

I'm not sure whether this is subject to Spellbook. Could you Spellbook out the encounter power for another Daily? I'd rule yes but I don't honestly know how RAW would handle that.

The class feature specifically says one spell, so you choose one spell and that is now an encounter rather than a daily. Your extra (or 2 extra with Exp SpBook feat) are pretty much wasted. They cannot be selected any more as you have no 29th daily slot to use them in.

This seems like the best way to handle it. I agree that it works pretty much exactly as utilities of different periods (?) do with regard to your spellbook. You have a slot of whatever level of daily power you selected as your archspell. You can prepare in that slot each day either your archspell (which you can use once per encounter throughout that day) or a daily power of the same level (which you can use once that day).
