and yes, d12's got the shaft. NO ONE uses them. EVER. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER have I seen a d12 used in D&D.
Must not have played 1st ed., then, 'cause the long sword (back then it was two words) used a d12 for damage against large (no upper case 'L') creatures...

I am SO glad that they got rid of the 'large' variant in damage. It never made any sense to me.

*shrug* Yeah, and when using 1d20, the randomizing tool itself is neither predictable nor consistent, often making chance more important than skill.
No, thanks; I'll take a bell-curve (a 2d10 one, presumably) over 1d20 any day.

Heh. There's a reason they had to invent things like 'take 10', ya know. ;)
(I'm glad that they did, BTW. But still...)

I hear ya... :)
But I can understand the other side as well; if you roll very low, your stats won't get very far no matter how much magic you apply to them ('cause you could have used the same magic with higher stats as well).
The best solution to this problem is a level-less system that allows you to directly spend xp for stat increases, combined with an xp system that doesn't give flat xp awards to everyone. But neither does D&D make that easy to implement, nor would everyone want to use it.

Au Contraire, I find that Point Buy is the only way to keep my more immature players from bitching and moaning about the fact that Bebo has a 11 Cha and he has a 10 cha.

Gamecat:

What kind of sociopath are you, anyway?

'cause a real sociopath would just kill the bitching players and take their stuff.

Well, a lonely one, becase I play with the crew of scags I do, specifically Bebo, Shadowrun Man, and The Flaming Rheo, and while they have their good moments (last nights sessions was friggin' epic) they are such PAINS IN MY ASS.
